Good stuff, Ramona, but I noticed at least one tip that needs some clarification ...

Actually, it depends on what's in the location bar when ALT + Enter is pressed. If the open webpage is the product of the URL in the location bar, you'll get a duplicate tab. If it's a different URL you'll get a new tab open at that page. If for some reason the location bar is empty, as in the case of a blank tab, nothing will happen.

If you type something into the location bar that's not a URL and press ALT + Enter, you may get a new tab open at a Wikipedia article or you may get a Google search page. Type a string of nonsense characters, and there's no telling what you'll get. :)

    JSS3rd,
Confused, is this "duplicate" tab NOT a "NEW" tab - for the url you typed in ?

If the entry is not a valid url, I think it will depend on if you have for "keyword.enabled" - and what you have set for "keyword.url "
    "keyword.enabled" is initially set in\Program Files\.......\greprefs\all.js
    set to False
    and then modified in:
    \Program Files\.........\defaults\pref\firefox.js
    reset to TRUE
    default "keyword.url" is set to=
    # Keyword URL (for location bar searches)
    keyword.URL=http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
or what ever you have it set for.

    Just a couple of thoughts.

I think you may have misunderstood me. Of course, any "new" tab is a new tab. But if, for example, the FF window is displaying the Windows BBS home page and "http://www.windowsbbsdotcom" (read .com) is displayed in the location bar, pressing ALT + Enter will open a new tab displaying the same page. That's what I meant by "duplicate" tab.

FWIW, I almost never type in URLs ... I normally open web pages either from bookmarks or from links in emails, Google searches, or other web pages.

    Zcorpio ...

I'm using XP Pro, but I'd think Vista would have something similar.
Control Panel > Add/Remove > Set Program Access and Defaults: If you select "Microsoft Windows ", IE will automatically be set as your default browser. If you select "Custom ", you can select IE as the default.
    HTH.
