I have 2 PCs running XP Pro and, in the past, I have used the network which I set up to transfer and share files. haven't done this for over a year so I tried to do so today. Both PC's give the message ' cable unplugged', which it isn't. reinstalled both ethernet drivers but still get the same message. One PC has Via and the other DLink and worked fine a year ago. Any suggestions what might be the problem or on how to test the ethernet cable?
When I try to 'set up a new network', I get a similar message.

Not that technical but if memory serves it is a crossover cable, was bought as an 'ethernet cable' if that is any help.

If you bought an 'Ethernet cable' chances are that it would be straight thru cable and not crossover cable, which you require.

Ask specifically for a crossover cable.

I am trying this file sharing thing between two machines for the first time and having the exact same problem. I bought a CAT 5 network cable. Is that right or do I need something else?

Buy a ethernet crossover cable or you would need a switch and 2 ethernet cables to connect 2 computers.
