    I sometimes need to load an e-mail file (filename.eml) into IE6 and then save it as an .html file. Since a couple of weeks it isn't possible anymore. I get an error message 'The page cannot be displayed'.

    I suspect a Windows update to be responsible.

    Does anyone have a clue?

    Thanks.

    Do you have a Popup stopper installed? These will cause problem with links sometimes.
    Are Outlook Express and IE your default Email client and default browser.
    You might try the Internet Explorer Repair tool. Go to Add/remove programs in Control Panel and select IE then click the remove button. Choose repair IE from the resulting menu.

    Thanks for your response.
    My pop-up stopper isn't the cause since I had it already before the troubles started and when I unload it, the error is still there.

    IE is my default browser. Because I have Windows XP, I don't have the IE Repair tool and I can't uninstall IE6.

    Any further suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Open the email, click file>save as and where it says save as type, choose html file. Then open the file in IE. Don't know if this helps or not as I'm not sure I'm understanding you're problem correctly.

    I found the solution to my problem. I uninstalled the Internet Explorer update Q818529 and the Outlook Express update Q330994 and now the error is gone.

    So I was right by suspecting a Windows update after all.

    Thanks.

    I agree but in the mean time I determined that in fact only the Outlook Express update (Q330994) caused this trouble. So I restored the Internet Explorer update (Q818529).

    In this case the Outlook Express patch introduces a bug in Internet Explorer which reduces it's functionality. Since Outlook Express is not my default e-mail client and thus use it rarely I choose to skip this update.

    Thanks for the advice anyway.

    For what it's worth:

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-014.asp
    Cumulative Patch for Outlook Express (330994)
    ================copy/paste==================
    ...an attacker could attempt to construct a URL and either host it on a website or send it via email. In the web based scenario, where a user then clicked on a URL hosted on a website, an attacker could have the ability to read or launch files already present on the local machine
    (snip)
    Applying the update listed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-004 -- Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer—will help block an attacker from being able to load a file onto a user’s computer and prevent the passing of parameters to an executable. This means that an attacker could only launch a program that already existed on the computer—provided the attacker was aware of the location of the program—and would not be able to pass parameters to the program for it to execute.
    (snip)

    I don’t use Outlook Express to read e-mail. Do I still need this patch?

    Yes
    since the URL Handler that deals with MHTML files is actually in Outlook Express, you should install this patch regardless of whether you use Outlook Express to read e-mail.
    =============end c/p=================

    I don't think it's a bug, it is intended that way!
