I just installed Netscape 7.1 on my new WinXP machine, and it seems to be working fine except for one thing: Midi files don't play when they appear on a wep page.

I know this has to do with "Helper Applications" . The box there first showed "midi" and when that didn't work I tried putting in the Windows Media Player ( "audio/mid ") but that doesn't work either.

I remember I had a similar problem when I first used Netscape 3 or Netscape 4, and I solved it then, but I can't remember how. Can someone tell me?

    Hi xelaw,

If the midi files are embedded you will need a plugin, such as Beatnik. The Live Audio plugin which was a component of Communicator, doesn't work with Netscape 7.1.

    Download Beatnik here

You might also want to take a look at the Plugin Doc - Windows site.

    Ramona, thanks, but...

I downloaded the Beatnik player, and then tried to browse from the helper window in Netscape 7.1 to plug it in. But I couldn't find an executable file in the player directory. What do I do now?

    xelaw,

Beatnik is a plugin, not a Helper Application, and you won't find an executable file. Only .dll files in the \Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\ plugins folder. Plugins automatically tell Netscape what MIME types and file extensions they work with when they are installed. There is no configuration involved with plug-ins, only installation

There is a better download for Beatnik, which I should have posted first, so please forgive my omission. Holger Metzger has Beatnik posted on his site. It's a Zip file, with a ReadME file included. It's very simple and self explanatory. Go ahead and uninstall the current Beatnik in the Windows Add/Remove Panel, then download Holger's plugin here:
    http://www.holgermetzger.de/ple.html

Beatnik Player V2.0.5.2 (Netscape Communicator 4.xx)
Beatnik Player for Netscape. Plays rmf, aif, aiff, au, wav, mid, midi files. Same function as the Netscape Live Audio, but Beatnik features better sound quality.
Note: patches.hsb must be copied into the Windows folder.
    Download
    ----

Once you copy the Beatnik files to the appropriate folders, here is a test page for embedded midi files:
