I have 2 computers on a router and both are getting access to the cable modem ok, but I can not get either computer properly set up for file and printer sharing.
In fact, it does not appear that they can even see each other in a network. I set eveything to "Share ", and ran a network set up utility, but it did not set it up for me. I have read some of the post to this site , and it is hard for me to see exactly where to start to troubleshoot the issues. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am new to the networking world, so some of the terminolgy is still a challenge. Thank's

What operating systems are on both computers?

If XP, HOME or PRO? Not HOME I hope.

What is the model of the Router?

Good Router same one I have.

Ok XP HOME is not good at networking but we can do it I hope.

Let me gather some info first.

On the xp machine go to command prompt and type

    ipconfig /all >xpcfg.txt

    exit the command prompt

Use search to find xpcfg.txt open in wordpad copy the text and paste it back in a message.

Now do the same on the ME machine get that back to me.

While I am reading this on the XP go to Control panel-System-Network Identification and get the name of the workgroup. I set mine to HOME!

Then on the ME rt click Network Neighborhood-identification and change this to match the XP.

Still on the ME log off (not restart or shutdown) and log back on to the ME machine with the exact "EXACT" same username and password as the XP.

    Waiting on info.

    That looks OK!

So if you have logged off the ME and back on with same username and password do this.

On XP rt click My Network places the search for computers and look for hewlett-5k1589j the name of the other computer.

On the ME do the same and search for N5Q4Z0 the XP.

Let me know the results of both!

    Mike

Sorry late getting back had phone calls.

I rebooted each computer. (I do not use passwords)
The ME computer only see's itself.
The XP computer see's both, but when I examine "Properties" on the me computer listed in my network places, it gives error "Server N5Q4Z0 could not be found "
    I hope this helps. Thank's

Be more descriptive. By seeing does that mean you can browse to the ME. Copy files etc??

That everything works from the XP side?

If so we will deal with the ME?

On the XP go to Control panel-System-Network Identification and get the name of the Computer. Give me that name.

Also on the XP enable the guest account!

Recheck the access. I am trying to pin down what else is left.

    Thank's Mike.
Sorry for using the term "Seeing ". What I meant was that the
XP computer (hewlett-5k1589J) list both the computers in the results of a "Search" for computers in My Network.
The ME computer (N5Q4Z0) only list itself as the search result in My Network.
I also mis-stated in the previous note when I said "but when I examine Properties on the me computer ", should have read "but when I examine Properties on the XP computer..." sorry.
I have not yet found where to enable "Guest Account ", can you point me to it ?
Also to clarify the current access status of the XP computer, no, I can not browse or access anything other than it's own files.
I do have norton Internet security firewall active on each computer. Would that make a difference ?

No Norton will not be the problem.

Go to control panel-administrative tools-computer management find Local users and groups-guest. Properties uncheck account is disabled.

When I asked if you could browse I meant when you find the computer in network what happens if you click it? Does it open to show a drive, if so if you click the drive do you see folders?

If not exactly what is the error?

To confirm you have file sharing on go to the ME and rt click the My Documents folder is there a sharing entry if so click it then choose to share then click full.

Now try to use network to browse to this folder from the XP.

Sharing Access...Full, was already enabled on the ME computer.
I enabled Guest Account under "Users ". It is now "on "

When I double click the ME computer from the XP computer, I get the following error message, "N5Q4Z0 is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. " "The network path was not found ".

On the ME something in Network settings is not right.

    Rt click Network Neighborhood-properties.

There should be a "Client for microsoft networks ", dbl click it and uncheck Log on to Windows NT Domain, then put the DOT in Quick Logon.

Below this big box is a smaller one that says "Primary Network logon" set this to "Windows logon ".

    This will require a reboot!

Now you should be able to browse the ME from the XP. After you confirm that this is working we will tackle XP from the ME.

    Let me know.

I will check back in the morning. To bed now.

I made the changes to microsoft client--properties (on the ME), but it (XP) still gives the same error message.( "..not accessable, don't have permission, network path not found..)
I noticed another tab under(ME) Network, called Access Control. It is set on Share Level Access.
Windows Log on was already set.
Thank's for sticking with me on this.

Ok! This is a permissions problem!

On the XP go back to the place where you found the Guest account. Find the name you are logged on as. Give yourself a password, something simple like iwi (for I Want In). Log off and back on with this new password.

Then go to ME log off, then back on with the same username and password that was used on the XP.

Retest access to the ME from XP.

Get back to me as soon as you can, I have only an hour before I leave for a while. So I will be right here for you till then

    Additional info :

On the (XP) under network connections it shows both an
"Internet Gateway ", and "LAN or High Speed Internet ". Is this correct ?
Also, I am wondering if the configuration of the Router is correct for both Internet access, and Networking. Is there a way to check this ?
    Thank's

    You said Internet is working!

In any case it has nothing to do with what we are working on now!

So lets deal with one thing at a time. What is the result of the password message.
