    Links

I've tried numerous ways to delete the "Links" dropdown in Favorites in both Windows 2000 and 98 on my two different machines. I've highlighted the properties and made it hidden; I've removed the folder in Explorer, etc. But it always makes its way back eventually.

How do I get rid of the Links folder PERMANENTLY?

Did the instructions in the link work for you?

Well, I tried the "making it hidden" thing, but it still eventually comes back. I did not try to change the registry, since I don't like messing with it.

Too bad there is not another way.

    JRG:

I understand your hesitancy in messing around in the registry, as a wrong move can cause a lot of problems. But this fix is relatively painless, as long as you pay attention to what you are doing and back up the effected key first.

To back up the key click on Start>Run, type Regedit and click on OK. Once Regedit is running click on the + in front of HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then on the + in front of Software, then the + in front of Microsoft, then on the + in front of Internet Explorer and then on the + in front of Toolbar.

Right click on the Toolbar folder and select "Export" from the pop-up menu. Give the file a name and save it to a location that you can remember in case you need to reinstall it. Your backup has now been created.

Now look on the right side of the screen for the LinksFolderName key.

If it exists double click it and set the String Value to a blank string by deleting all of the text.

If the key does not exist create it by right clicking on the right side of the screen, select New>String Value from the pop-up menu and name the new key LinksFolderName and leave the String Value blank.

    Click OK and close Regedit.

Then open Internet Explorer and manually delete the Links folder from the Favorites Menu, or delete it from the Favorites Folder using Windows Explorer.

Reboot your system, the Links folder should not be recreated.
