    Hi,

I have this problem in Outlook Express and to some degree in IE (version 6.0) too. The links I receive imbedded in my emails don't seem to work properly. A new blank IE window opens up but never loads the URL. I can get around it by right-clicking on the link and choosing copy shortcut, then left-clicking on the link and inserting the URL in the blank IE window and then clicking "go ".

While this method works it is a real pain and time consuming. I have the same problem with some links on web pages using IE 6. I have tried reloading Outlook Express and IE 6 to no avail. I am running an Athlon 850 mhz, with half a gig of ram and a 40 gig hard drive.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    no live link in oe

Well I see you move your querry over here, good, always start a new thread after we fix an old one:cool:

Try this: This program is tied in so many ways to the inner workings it could be several things I suppose.
Is Internet Explorer set to be default browser?
Are email messages displayed as HTML?

Or this if repair don't work: windows explorer/tools/folder options/file types

    highlight URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol/Advanced/Edit

under application used to perform action it should read:

    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Being tied to Internet Explorer you might want to try IE repair to solve your problem.
Go to start/run and type in msinfo32, click ok and choose IE repair from the tools menu or go to control panlel/add and remove programs, when you click to remove IE a menu will pop up, choose repair.

If you still have problems, try this site.

    Still Blank

    Hi,

That is a very neat site, however, I haven't found a fix for my problem. I tried to repair IE but it ran without problems.

As to messages being displayed as HTML... Yes, they display just fine. Plain text messages are also just fine. I might add that when using the link from this forum I had the usual blank window problem. Incidentally, I can send links with no problem on the other end.

I have looked through the settings and don't see anything amiss. There may be a registry problem, but as was mentioned, IE and OE are so interwoven in the OS I don't really know where to start.

I have also tried to run Netscape as my default browser to eliminate the problem, but I don't like Netscape and OE wants to use IE.

    Now Half Blank

    Hi Rancher,

I checked out the file types in Windows Explorer and the file for action was correct. However, I also decided to check the box marked "always show extension ". This cause Outlook Express to function normally again. But, I still seem to have the problem with IE. I tried to click on the OE site link here and still got a blank screen.

It would seem that I do have a registry problem. I looked at the registry entries for OE but I really don't see anything that might be the problem. I know that editing and amending "file types" makes the appropriate changes to the registry but doesn't say what was done.

    Still Shooting Blanks?

    Hi Rancher,

I am currently using IE6 as my default browser. I only tried Netscape because I was looking for a cure to my problem. I went to the MS support page and followed their suggestions without any success. The problem with Outlook Express is completely cured but I am still getting blank screens with Internet Explorer when there are embedded links.

I would like to cure the current problem, but I am really thankful for your help with the Outlook Express problem. Half of a cure is better than none so I am happy with the current outcome. I suspect that there is still a problem in the registry for IE but I could spend a lifetime trying to find it and probably destroy the system in the process. I will have to live with the problem until the next time I have a hard drive go south.

Thanks for all the help. :) :)

    a rather dirty way.....but

    phar1944
Run the following commands from start/run.

Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a short message stating the command was successful.

    regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll

    regsvr32 shdoc401.dll)

    regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

    good luck

I tried the commands and registered all the dll's but still blank. It's a good thing I am having such bad luck with this thing else I wouldn't have any luck at all.

    Paul:( :p

    could this change your luck?

    Try this
What happens if you right-click on the link and select Open Link in New Window from the mouse-menu? Does it open up in a new window?
    :)

    Open Right Or Left

The default is to open the link in a new window so if I right click and choose open in a new window (or just plain open) I get the exact same result, namely a blank window. I might add that I get an hourglass symbol if I place the cursor over the blank window and I see the little animation of the earth spinning up in the right corner. It acts as though it is trying to load a page, but it just sits there without anything more than what I described. It is almost as if it never actually gets the URL. Wacky, huh?

    Linkless Links cont.

    Hi it's me again.

I was wondering if my problem has something to do with Java. I seem to recall having some sort of difficulty with the Java Runtime Environment and Java scripts a while back. Anyone knowledgeable would be helpful. TIA.

    Still The Same

    Hi Arie,

Thank you for the suggestion. I downloaded the file and ran it but apparantly I already have all the dll's because I received a "the version you have is newer" message for what seemed like all of the files. Funny thing is that it never occurred to me that one of the other MS programs could be at fault besides OE or IE. I am beginning to fear that the only cure for this problem is to reload Windows after reformatting my hard drive. I have had two hard drive "crashes" in the past year and they were not very pleasant so I think I will just have to live with the problem and hope someone else has it too. Thanks again. :)

Oh.. forgot to tell you... choose replace to go 'back' to the older DLL's.... That'll do the trick....

You might take a note before, and make a backup of the DLL's getting replaced....

    No More Shooting Blanks!

O.K. Arie I followed your instructions and I am now back to normal, or at least as normal as Windows 98 ever gets. Thank you very much. If you can spare the time I would really like to know what the specific problem was but all that really matters is that it is fixed.

    I now fully understand the comment: "That's not a bug; it's an improvement ". :D :D

To be honest, I'm not sure! I should have that info somewhere.... but where??? I just had a link to the fix, and I knew (had many reports) that it would probably work in your situation....
