"Limited or No Connectivity" error message

    I now have an icon in the bottom that says limited or no connectivity. If I click on the icon I get a local area connection status screen. I have no idea what this is or what to do. Other than that I see I now have pictures blocked on my e-mails and have to click on a message above the e-mail to get the pictures.

    The icon you see is an option that you can select by going to Control Panel > Network Connection > double click your local connection > click Properties > and you'll see the option boxes that may be of interest to you.

    However, if it is indicating limited or no connection, you probably have some problem that you may want to contact your ISP about.

    As for the pictures not appearing, that sounds like a Security setting so you'll have to review what you have set in your Browser under Tools > Internet Options > and either the Security tab or the Advanced tab.

    I should have added that I am on DSL and no networking involved. Could the limited or no connectivity mean a dial up connection? I have no problem connecting with my DSL. If I were to try a dial up connection, perhaps there would be a problem. If there were, how should I handle that?

    Even so, you have Networking installed for connectivity.

    Perhaps you have more connections created than you actually need or have available.

    Check the location I gave you earlier and see if you need to disable any unused connections. Possibly delete them if you're sure you don't want them. Leave your DSL connection of course. :) If you don't have any other than the DSL, then you can choose to not see the icon as I mentioned earlier. I would be concerned that something was amiss if the icon indeed applied to the DSL and would contact the ISP for assistance.

    As for the last question, the first line of attack when having connectivity problems is to contact your ISP. They have a vested interest in keeping you happily connected. Besides, their support comes with the price of your service.

    ive seen this before one 1 occasion, and i resolved it by going to device mananger and deleteing the network adapter and reinstalling it and it resolved it.

    keep us updated i want to know how/if you fixed it.

    This is a bug with XP SP2. I ran accross it this weekend. MS has a hotfix (KB 884020) that didn't help me. I was able to connect after dropping the connection speed of the NIC from 100 to 10. I am going to try reinstall the NIC drivers as mentioned above and see if I can then run at 100.

    rondom, try this

    After sending an E-mail to MS, I got the following answer:


    1. Click Start, click Run, type "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.

    2. Right-click the connection with an overlaid yellow symbol and click Properties.

    3. Click on the "General" tab, highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) ", and click Properties.

    4. Click on the "Alternative Configuration" tab, select the "User configured" radio box.

    5. Type 192.168.0.2 in the "IP Address" field.

    6. Type 255.255.255.0 in the "Subnet mask" field.

    7. Click OK twice.

    After following the advice, every thing works just fine.
    Just to let all you good people know and maybe some one else can use this info.

    Thank you for providing the answer that you obtained from Microsoft. I entered the IP numbers in the two boxes and my local area connection's status is now "Connected." Since installing Service Pack 2 my computer has been doing some strange things. The worst problem has been that I've been unable to connect with others via Remote Assistance. :D :D
