This question applies to both Windows 95 and 98. I volunteer at a not-for-profit agency with a computer lab.

We need to limit internet access on most of the machines. Is there any sure way to do this other than taking it off the program list and desktop?. The kids can't access Control Panel, but can access Windows Explorer and some may be smart enough to find the executable file in Program Files.

Are you wanting to limit their access or restrict it?

    Restrict access to internet

Actually, we want to restrict access, not limit it. Thanks for the clarification. We would want to allow access later.

I guess I should have also asked if these computers are connected to the internet, ie; networked through ICS, or do they have individual connections. Either way, how about using a firewall configured to restrict all outside access without a password?

I can see I didn't explain my question properly. ALL pcs are connected to the internet via network (not individually). We want to allow internet access to only 2 of the machines. Hope this is sufficient information.

I do think the easiest way to do this is with a firewall. If using ICS, all PC's connected through 1, you should be able to install it on main PC and allow only certain ones access to the web. If connected through a hub, each being connected directly, you would need to install it on all PCs. I'm not sure about others but Computer Associates has an easily configured and locked firewall at a reasonable price, and a free trial. I use it and with a right click on the taskbar icon I get a menu with options to 'Engage Internet Lock' or 'Stop All Internet Activity'.

"Disable Internet Access (All Windows) New
By using this tweak you are able to restrict access to the Internet when using Internet Explorer and other Microsoft compatible products such as Office. "

Not sure if this will help, but in internet explorer there are security settings and if you do a custom level you can set it to prompt for user name and password
