A lot of my friends have been telling me that there neighbors have been sued for downloading music illegally. How does this work? I have been hearing this more than before so is there something new that Service Providers are doing?

All of a sudden, the RIAA monitors IP?

    Thanks!

It works the same way everything on the Internet works: Anything you download is 'recorded' in log files with your (computers) IP address. When RIAA /Law enforcement take down a 'server' offering these downloads they'll start tracing who downloaded. Next they get to the ISP who (by law) has to hand over your details.

The more this happens the better. Some people need to realize that taking things without paying for them is stealing - a crime.

The real Crime Arie is legit users get treated like thieves while those who choose to pirate get the best deal ie: If i buy an movie take it home slip it into the DVD player i then have to sit through minutes of don't copy it's theft b@ll@cks that can't be skipped where if i were to D/L a pirated copy i get to watch the movie straight away. or games that come loaded with Draconian style DRM UBI-soft is one of the biggest offenders

further more the RIAA or for that matter MPAA is not an govt law enforcement organization so an ISP should be able to tell them SOD off get a warrant and some cops / FBI agent
