Guys, I'm doing a PC build for a buddy and am having some concerns over CPU installation. It's a Pentium D 775 going into an Asus P5L-MX 945G 775.

Now I've never done this so maybe I'm just overly cautious here, but one I place the CPU into the slot, no matter what I do there is a bit of horizontal wiggle. The gold key is definitely orientad properly and the cpu is being inserted with the correct side up (the silver side is up).

Now as I bring the plate down I'm very nervous as the CPU seems to move a bit as I do so. I'm very hesitant to apply more force here and wanted to ask if this sort of thing was normal under the LGA 775 installation procedure. Definitely trying to avoid being those pins.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Tom

The pins fit into clearance holes. As you bring down the locking lever the mechanism shifts the CPU fractionally to make good contact in the socket.

The resisting force you feel is the locking mechanism going over centre to perform the locking operation.

Sure you have read the installation instructions with both mobo and CPU re fitting :)

    Okay, first thanks again guys.

Second, I have to decalare myself as officially, really, really, stupid, as, in fact, I had the plastic protector on the CPU. Luckily, I wasn't dumb enough to go jamming on things and everythin, so far, seems "none the worse for wear ".

Did I mention this was my first ever CPU installation?

Ah, well, this is a build for a friend of mine, so what he doesn't know won't hurt him :)

Actually, everything's in the case and I'm getting ready to call down the lightening "It's alive....ALIVE!!" Well, we'll see soon enough if I did everything properly.

For those interested, the build is:
    Intel - Pentium D 2.8
    Asus - P5L-MX 945G
    Corsair Value Select - 1 Gig, 1 Dimm 667
Sata HD, Optical / IDE Floppy

Hoping everything goes well. You may here back from me soon enough!

    Tom
