The "pirated" copy of XP isn't exactly what it seems. The HP Pav came with XP on it and all I could do was borrow a copy of a friends cause mine disappreared when when I was deployed. I got back and my CPU was fried and most of my software was scattered and the XP disc was no where to be found. To save the most amount of time, I used the word "pirated ". If this is still a no-no then I apologize, but I still need to get this thing running.

You need a Win XP cd so that you can boot off it and run Repair.

From my understanding, the licensing agreements for HP versions of Windows and normal "off the shelf" retail versions of Windows are different. The HP version covers only the one (HP) machine that you own. Since you have changed the motherboard, it is no longer a HP product and will not be covered by their licensing agreement.
The retail version of Windows XP covers several machines/computers, but you may be limited in how many times you can use it .
The HP installation disk (that you lost) will have Windows + drivers + other HP software already "coded" onto the disk. I wonder that the other ( "pirated ") disk you have used is causing the virus-type problems because it does not have the correct drivers. If you go to the HP website and look for information on lost or damaged CDs or upgrading Windows, you will see what I mean.

Personally, I think you will have a good system with the new motherboard and be free of the HP limitations and restrictions, but you will need to get a retail copy of Win XP or use an older version of Windows that you own to get the machine running (as I said in your original post).

    Matt,
Thanks for the help. I asked a friend to come over and he brought his software. He started it with the disc in and it came right up. I didn't know that I was going to lose everything on the old HD, but I'd already pulled most of it off. That's OK though. I wanted to get that one running for my wife. She needed an upgrade from her old one. Thanks again.

Glad to hear you got it going. Check at the Asus website for the motherboard/chipset drivers if your friend did not install them, I think you will find that they will run a lot better than standard Windows drivers.

A full format was probably needed to remove the old drivers and HP stuff. Look at starting a backup system for your data, you never know when your HDD may fail or you get to an unrecoverable situation and you need to format.

It should "rock along" quite nicely :)
