So, I recently installed a legal version of XP over a bootlegged version that had been running on my computer. Now, when I started downloading some material from a non-windows program I left my computer running and left. When I came back an hour later the program was no longer downloading--however, when I stopped and restarted the dowload, everything went back to normal.

Is there some XP setting that I should adjust to keep programs running while my computer is idle?

Possibly a problem at the download server, but you should check out your Power Options in Control Panel as these may possibly be the source of the problem. I am not too sure how XP sees a download in terms of computer activity.

    I suggest ....

Monitor - to suit - I choose to use 15 mins
Turn off Hard Disks - Never
    System Standby - Never
    Hibernation - Disable.
