    Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I need to pick up a few 19" LCD VGA monitors for work. Most of our work is text based and clear, sharp text seems to be a weakness of many LCD's.

Besides reviewing each and every one in person, what can I look for in specifications that would lead me in the right direction.

From what I gather, dot pitch is important but is an unreliable spec. Response time is unimportant as gaming is not a work activity (though some may disagree).

    Thanks, Larry

My CRT's soldier on so I have no first hand experience, but I would suggest that contrast ratio is important - higher the better.

    Hehehe .........

    Nice signature Larry.

Go with Samsung if you want to be safe. If you have a Sam's close by, they have a 19" widescreen for $199 that is better than most and text will be very good.

    ;)

Response time is most important factor.
If using graphical desktop (XP) w/ flat panels, then go to:
    rt click desktop > Properties
    Appearance Tab > Effects button
'Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts' > ClearType

You'll notice a huge difference in quality of text on the screen. Also, MS has a free add on called ClearType Tuner that can be used to adjust fonts appearance w/ more precision for the user.

You can even turn on ClearType and Tune it using this MS automatic web page:

I'll second Rockster. I have just invested in a Samsung 19" 94V. It's not top of the range, but at 1280 x 1024 the text on screen is excellent, in fact I would say as good as my old CRT.

    Hmmm, Samsung, eh?

The 94V is apparently a Euro model. Locally, Office Max has a 931B for $220. I may need a model with speakers (as bad as they always are). I'll ck it out.

    Thanks, Larry

It seems that someone's proud of their new rig! Larry, now that you're an expert on Athlon 64 tweaking/overclocking can you give me some advice? :)

I'm not a flat panel person but Samsung sure seems to have a good rep with them. As a matter of fact they seem to produce excellent PC components - period. The Samsung DVD burner I just bought simply screams quality.

Sorry, but what else beside Samsungs? Turns out that it needs to have speakers, too. Samsung only has 2 models, both with TV Tuners ($$$)!!

    Thx, Lar

ViewSonic monitors are always well reviewed. I rate PCPro reviews. They like the Philips 170B7 in 17" monitors. This link points to a labs test for 17" monitors, where the Philips came top.

Thanks guys. The lab report at PC Pro is great except that I am looking at 19" models instead of 17's. I would imagine that the brand quality would be somewhat consistent across different sizes.
