Are all LCD monitors brighter and colors more vivid than CRT types?

I've tried several LCDs, three Samsung widescreen 19 ", an LG 19" (4:3) and a ProView 19" (4:3). On all I've set the brightness to '0', the colors to about the 50% level (maybe I should have taken those down much more) and the screen is still too bright. Especially the greens - bright. Maybe I'm not adjusting the colors correctly. I use the old TV technique of mixing the colors until I get what looks like a white background for the desktop.

I do mostly photo-editing and creating newletters. My CRT monitor is still going strong, but I thought I'd try the LCD. I may order a 17" (4:3) online - there are non available in local Best Buy or Circuit City.

Any suggestions - sure would appreciated some input!

    LOOOOOOOL
Seriously speaking, I recently bought Viewsonic VA1930 19" wide screen, and I'm very happy with it.

Broni, I'd like to stay with the 4:3 aspect ratio with what I do. With your ViewSonic can you colors down to what they appear to be on a CRT, especially the green.

One example, when playing solitaire on a CRT the background is a very dark green, almost black. When going to the LCD, either VGA or DVI jack, it's really a bright green. I hadn't tried sliding the red, green and blue color settings close to zero - that may have helped.

    I think I'll be ordering a 17" ViewSonic online and give it a try.

Some, but it'll never look like CRT.

I am looking at the moment at the ViewSonic VP2030B, I have been told for this Monitor to be very good.
Reviews are generally good for this 20" Monitor.

hawk22, guess I've decided on the ViewSonic, but a 17 ". Really have no need for a larger screen - not a gamer, nor do I watch movies on the computer.

    Thanks for the add. info!

It's simply my hunch but I don't think you should be mixing colors on your LCD. From my experience, an LCD has various color profiles to choose from, some warmer, some colder. On my Viewsonic VP930B I just went with the default which, IIRC, was sRGB....and IMHO, the colors look great and "accurate ".

My somewhat "budget" Acer had some presets for various activities. I chose the preset for "reading text" or whatever they called it and it had a lower brightness. I don't think I had to adjust the brightness on my Viewsonic. But I do hear a lot of people having to decrease their LCD's brightness.

Is it possible that you're simply not used to the more "eye-popping" experience of using an LCD vs. a CRT? When I went from an excellent NEC Diamondtron CRT to my Viewsonic, the increased color vibrance, contrast, sharpness, etc. was very noticeable.

Chiles4: Your assessment is probably right, because when watching a Samsung 42 or 50 inch (whatever) TV, to me, the colors are extremely vivid whereas others think it's great.

Chiles you did mention in my post selecting LCD Monitor that you are doing regular photo editing on your 19" VP930B this model here in Australia is not (or no longer available) no 19" VP series only 20" and 21 ".
I have been reading up a fair bit on the VP2030B Monitor it has the P-MVA panel and as you are very happy with the colour reproduction on the VP930B I was wondering if it has the same panel. As Trident states, colours to me are also in general very strong on LCD's and I guess this is the major reason why I have not upgraded to LCD.
The VP2030B has been recommended to me by a major Monitor distributor here in Melbourne as one of the better professional monitors in the under $1000.- mark.$AU619.- at the moment.
Dell have lost me with their Panel Lottery I use a 17" at work and I'm not impressed at all with it, my boss has a 20" and his is brilliant not a TN Panel.
Samsung also have changed the 226BW was a very very good monitor when it was using the S-PVA panel from Samsung, they are now using on the same monitor the Chai Mai TN panel 2ms response time great for games but useless for photos.

Yeah it's a shame that LCD mfrs. play "panel lottery" as sometimes you can end up with a loser even though you select a very well-respected LCD.

The VP930b is quite old and I don't think you can find it in many places anymore.
