This problem of not printing started after the computers were upgraded from Windows 98se to Windows XP Pro. I have downloaded the correct (according to HP) driver, LJ1125en.exe. With HP's help I have been able to get one printer to work. Since I'm responsible for getting five more operational, I need some help. One operator has installed an incorrect driver. That printer did not print before the installation and still does not print.

What happens when the printer icon is deleted from the printer screen? Is it necessarey to reinstall all the printer software? Will it be necesary to remove the incorrect driver? How?

I have unzipped the downloaded file and installed it in a folder. That folder is now on a CD. I can get to the Add Printer Driver Wizard screen and am unsure of the steps from this point. Are there other places I should be looking and modifying? Thank you.

We use these printers at work. You don't need the HP drivers if you are not using the optional scanner unit. If you delete the printer from the printers folder and reboot the pc with the printer attached and turned on, XP will automatically detect it and install it's own driver. This works fine.

If you have the optional scanner unit attached to the printer (HP1100A) then you need to download all the drivers and patches from HP before starting. Install the drivers in date order and the HP utilty will allow the scanner to be used. The native XP drivers don't have this feature.

Hope this helps - let us know how you get on.

    'Standard' procedure for removing/re-installing a printer .....

Go to Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes and right click on printer > Delete

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the printer software.

    Reboot

Incidentally, the driver you downloaded is the correct one, but I think you should also download the Point and Print bundle, which may also contain the driver - or not!

I see the Laserjet 1100 is parallel port so have it plugged in to the m/c

Go to the Add Printer Screen and follow the Wizard through. When you get to the 'Install Printer Software' screen click 'Have Disk' and browse to your CD drive (have your HP driver CD inserted), highlight the .inf file and click OK and next and so on.

Then load the other HP software.

If this fails there is a native MS driver for the Laserjet - on the Install Printer software screen highlight HP in the left hand column and scroll to Laserjet 1100 in the right hand column, highlight it > next

sherpa , We do not use the "optional scanner unit" so that doesn't have to be considered. What has been observed is that following start up, the printer doesn't print. But now that you have given a logical procedure for turning on the system, I'll give that a try when more printers become available.

PeteC , Your detailed procedure offers some good advice. I'll feel bolder if I can follow the steps that you have given.

Thanks you both for the help. I will not have access to more printers until the middle of next week and then I'll post back with some positive results. (I hope)

    Hi All,

Well the first printer that I checked using some of the pocedures given by Sherpa and PeteC did not work. Since then I have checked the cables and used two different computers. Printing was successful through each computer. So the problem is not the Printer but the software. Since the computers used with these printers have had the upgraded Windows XP installed recently and have not been used, I'm thinking of wiping the hard drive clean and re-installing WinXP.

These computers have a 10 gig hard drive and are not partitioned. Is it necessary to fdisk or is their a simple procedure before the re-install. Thank you.
