large icons on windows 98

Hi

I'm trying to help my sister in Canada to fix a problem with her computer that runs windows 98. She told me when she turned on her computer all the icons on her desktop are huge. I tried to talk her trough to set the screen resolution but it keeps going back to the same numbers. she cant change it. can anyone help me? I sure would appreciate any help. thanks.

Sounds like a gfx driver issue. Do you or your sister know what graphic adapter is in her computer and probably less important but is it 98 or 98 Second Edition?

 

I dont know the graphics adapter but I believe it is windows 98 second edition. She had this problem once before and when I visited her I was able to fix it that time but I cant remember what or how I did it. She does not have internet service so she does not have the latest updates for her computer. She uses this computer to play her games. What do you mean that it sounds like a gfx problem?

 

I would check to see if any Accessibility options have been turned on.

where would she check this? Its been a long time since I done anything on windows 98 so I dont remember where to check this from and my sister is just a novice with computers. I try to help her as much as I can over the phone. Thanks for your help in this matter

 

Right click on an empty spot of the desktop, highlight properties, left click. The Display Properties window will open up. The Effects tab has 'use large icons' as a checkable option. If checked, click to un-check it. While in Display Properties, check the display resolution - 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768 are three popular settings.

Start -> Programs, maybe under Accessories. Get her to type it into Start -> Help and read it to you if you can't direct her (that will probably be the best way for you to find something over the phone). [Sorry, that's from memory, I don't have Win 98 installed.]

It sounds like a graphics driver problem to me as well. Ask her to read out all the listings in Add/Remove Programs and check for graphics driver uninstallers. Get her to have the drivers CD at hand if you want to uninstall the current drivers. If so, when she reboots, get her to click Cancel when the Found New Hardware wizard runs and run the driver installer when she gets to the desktop.
