    Hello all,

I recently put a thread in called ' laptop start-up fail'...on how my laptop wasn't working..well i did take it back to the store i bought it from and as the store name changed from Clive peters to Joyce Mayne.. i could not get a refund but the staff there fixed my laptop for me and explained that it may of did what it did due to the updates! Well a little while after i got my fixed laptop back again it was working fine and everything and i again updated the laptop as the little shield was in my task bar..well the next time i went to turn it on the same thing happened..nothing..i cant access it at all now! What is it with the updates that is disabling my laptop? And how do i not get them to come up? I need my laptop back and was wondering if there was a way i could reboot it at home with my desktop like they did at the store or do i have to take it back to the store again? Its really starting to annoy me..i thought the updates were a good thing to do? But obviously its not in my case! Please help...

Hi missa85. Could you provide some more information about what is happening with your labtop?

Do you receive an error message when you boot up the labtop? Does the labtop freeze when you start it up?

Hi missa85, When you got the laptop restored by the Retailer did you ask the questions I put to you?

Quote:When/if you take it back to the Retailer, make a list of all that you would like to know about the Netbook. ie. How do I recover from a Freeze?
Have I got a recovery system?
How do I get to it?
What do I need to do to restore the OS?
Where is the operators Manual? etc. etc

If not - take it back to them as it must still be under warranty but please ask for all the info you can in case this happens again. Cheers Neil.

Ok I know what screen you are talking about. Do you have a Windows XP CD by any chance? If not can you borrow one from a friend or relative?

If you can't get your hands on a Windows XP CD then you may have to take it back to the store to get it fixed or if its still under warranty you can get it repaired.

This is NOT a laptop, it is a netbook according to one of their other threads. If they would stop calling it a laptop or notebook, may some of the questions for fixes would not be suggested. No CD or DVD is on it.

Their system specs says that it has a DVDRW in it. Kind of hard to help when fixing on computer and working on something different.

missa85, I think you need to take it back to the Retailer and demand that they give you the answers to those questions. You need to find out what they have done to restore it and whether you need to be aware of what is causing your problem. Let's know how you get on. Cheers Neil.;)

Bill, you are right - it is not a laptop. Missa85 is communicating with her Desktop PC.

I would take a guess that it is just coincidence that the PC is failling after an update and that infact there is a hardware issue with memory or the hard drive. Updates have been known to cause issues but if this was the case on this netbook I think it likely we would be seeing a lot more of the same problem.

I would insist on a full refund or a replacement (obviously that may be a problem as the shop has changed hands) but at the very least they should run diagnostics on the hard drive and memory.

Yeah sorry to confuse you ..it is a netbook and not a laptop..my bad.. and i would love to get a refund but as it is the shops have changed hands..i will be demanding them what is wrong with it though and why it keeps doing it after i update it! i will also make sure they tell me what to do if it happens again!

That us OK. Problem is lots of us are on several different message boards and it is hard to keep some of them straight. Always good to post specs if it is something different then what is in your system specs. I have 5 different PC's that are at my house, but I only have the System Specs for the one that I use the most. If it is one of the others that the grandkids or kids use, then I will throw those specs in the post. Sometimes jumping back and forth from one thread to another can get confusing.
I would do as suggested earlier and take it back and get them to explain what they did. I know it is different owners, but I still would ask.

Hi missa85, just checking in to see how you are progressing. Joyce Mayne should still honour warranties on items sold by previous owners or refer you to the Distributor for claims/repairs. Don't be fobbed off by Joyce Mayne as you should be covered by the Consumers Act (or the Aussie equivalent). Cheers Neil.:)

Be firm, but be nice. Don't take NO for an answer. I usually ask somebody 1 question and if I don't like the answer, my next question is "WHERE IS THE STORE MANAGER ".

LOL that would get a good outcome although im not sure i can be like that..authority scares me :D.. I was at a store yesterday getting my desktop cleaned and i filled him in about my netbook..he says if i can find out the keystroke for the restore point or something i can trick it into restoring itself! Now i cant find the keystroke..i still cant get into it at all nothing has changed..i just thought i would update you all!

Restoring to an earlier time (if you could do it) would, may be, get it running again, but it seems from what has previously happened the problem will return as soon as the updates are reinstalled.

You should not take "No" for an answer as there is clearly something wrong with your netbook and by that I mean something physically wrong with it.

When you go back to the store insist they run it through all the available updates and not let you have it back unless that has been done. I'll bet it fails again, then they should feel obliged to replace it.

Ok all i am currently on my netbook...I took it into the shop and they again rebooted it for me..than as it started up and did all the first installations with me standing next to him he turned off the automatic updates. I asked why it did it and he couldnt give me an answer but to say that he has never seen it before. He said that with the auto updates turned off that it shouldnt happen again. So here is to luck that it doesnt.

He said as long as i have a good current antivirus that it would be less harm me not having the auto updates off than it is to have them on?

Do i need the Automatic updates or not? And is there any other advice you can give me?

YES you do need automatic updates. His motive of thinking is like going to the Dr. and telling him every time you raise your arm over your head it hurts and the Dr. telling you not to raise it over your head.

    WHAT DID THE MANAGER SAY?
