I have had my laptop since July of 06. I use it almost everyday. I recently just noticed that my laptop mouse sometimes freezes every 7 seconds when I try to move it.

I already tried a cloth with windex. When that did not work, I tried a wet rag with soap. The mouse seems to be a bit better, but not by much.

Any ideas what I should do next?

Are you sure the laptop isn't busy doing something else? Try an external mouse and see if it has the same problem.

Not that I know of. My external mouse works fine when I plug it in and does not have the same effect as the touchpad has.

What model laptop do you have? And have you checked for later chipset and touchpad drivers?

I ran the Toshiba Software Upgrade Utility and it showed nothing new. Maybe if you want to help me out with finding where I can check the chipset and bios version. That would be good.

To identify your motherboard BIOS please download CPU-Z and save it to your Desktop.

    Unzip and run cpuz.exe.

Select the Mainboard tab and post the details that are in the BIOS panel (ie Brand version and Date).

No snow but it's quite cold here. ;)

    Improvement

Well, I don't know, maybe it is cleaning it or uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, the mouse is better but not the greatest.

It seems that when I have the external mouse plugged in, the touchpad works better, but as soon as I eject the exterrnal mouse, the touchpad is a little worse. If you have any other ideas, feel free to mention them.

Would you suggest that I continue to clean it with a small amount of windex or soap and water?

I do appreciate your help (wildfire.) I will you update you in this thread on how it works when I continue using it.

No, wipe with a dry cloth if you feel the need but don't introduce any more liquids to the key/mouse pad.

Please do, I'll be interested in your feedback.

Look for related "software" in Add or Remove Programs. My laptop touchpad has drivers, but also a software program associated with it that can adjust things like sensitivity and extra functions (eg, tapping and scrolling). I would uninstall them and reinstall them, but Toshiba don't have any descriptions for their downloads, just descriptions like "Toshiba Controls for Windows XP "(?), so you might need trial and error how to find a an update for the software. You might find touchpad software if you look in Control Panel (Classic View). There are 8 pages of downloads for your model, so I would look at what might be related in Add or Remove Programs, uninstall those after finding the related update at Toshiba, then reinstall the updated version.

Most mice come with software and maybe drivers. Look in Add or Remove programs for software or drivers for the external mouse, you can uninstall those, the mouse will work (better? :)) without them (unless you, say, have extra buttons). Even if I connect a wireless mouse, if it works, I don't install any drivers or software.

You can look through the listings in Device Manager and uninstall any listing for the mouse, it will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot.

    Matt

    An update

I will continue to update this thread. So far, once I cleaned the rodent, it seems to be working better: to the point where the problem is not noticable.
