    Hello Guys,
I have a Packard Bell Easynote SW51-B-012 laptop running Windows Vista and using a wired USB Mouse (Kensington). Memory is 1GB.
I am using a free version of AVG and full version of Advanced System Care
I have a problem starting windows.
After switching on the laptop, the Pakard Bell screen opens and just sits there not opening any further. I have tried pushing F8 but again it doesn't open further. The only way I have found to open Windows is to push F8 and to move the mouse. This then opens to the 'Entering Boot Menu' and aks which device to open from. After choosing 'Hardisk' it then sometimes asks which mode. After choosing 'Normal Mode' Windows starts up.
Can you please help on this?
    Regards

Hi ppeetteerr. Have you gone into your laptops BIOS and checked to make sure that the harddrive is set as the first boot device?

Does the startup process sit on the Pakard Bell logo and not proceed any further until you press F8 or does it go to a black screen?

Did you make any changes to the laptop before this issue started happening?

    Hello Evan,
    1) In the bios setup when I go on 'boot sequence' it gives me the option of, in this order; removable device, cd-rom, hardisk, pxe. Underneath it has the options of 'ok' or 'cancel' ('ok' is white with arrow and 'cancel' is greened out)
I can highlight 'hardisk' but both 'ok' and 'cancel' are greened out so even though I hit the return button it does not seem to change anything.
    2) The startup process sits on the pacard Bell logo until I press F8 but then only continues to the black 'entering system configuration utility' screen when I mve the mouse
    3) I have done a complete Packard Bell re-install
    Best regards
    Peter

In some BIOS's you have to press F5/F6 or the PageUp/PageDown Keys to change the boot order. See if the Packard Bell BIOS tells you what keys you have to press to change the boot order.

It sounds like the laptop is getting stuck on trying to boot from a device that has no media in it. Do you have any CD's in the CD drive? Do you have any removable USB sticks plugged into the laptop?

    Hello Evan,
I went back into the bios and checked the different keys as you suggested and I think I have suceeded in getting it to start from the hardisk as it is now starting up ok.
Thanks very much for you help and the information provided.
    Best Regards
