Hi Spanner. Try following the steps in this thread where I helped someone with a similar problem, Shutdown does not shutdown.

Did the slow logging off start happening recently or has it been occurring for a while?

Thanks Evan, I read that when I was surfing some possible answers in BBS, but we do not have 'Run' in Vista, so not sure how to get into 'Regedit'.
The shut down has been getting slower over a period of time, I have cleared Cookies etc, and now running Defrag, which is taking hours.
Hope it is sunny where you are, because it is p....ing down here, the drive and road is flooded and we have to go to the family get together, need a boat.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Right click the start button, properties, customize, advanced and go through the list and check run to show it on the start menu.

You can also hold down the Start Menu button on the keyboard and press R to bring up the run box that way.

Yeah its a bit rainy where we are but its nice just to stay at home and enjoy some nice family company.

Thanks Mr Bill & Evan, Got 'Run' on start menu, didn't know that was there.
Try to finish slow shut down now.

You are quite welcome. Don't have Vista and never really used it. I just went to our friend Google and found it. That guy is pretty smart sometimes. :D

Thanks again to Evan and Mr Bill, got things sorted now, followed instructions and improved shut down time, also checked out Dell Solution centre found we had junk not required, once we had got rid of that our startup and shut down is as fast as an F1 car.
    Thanks, will call this resolved.
