I have a HP Laptop 17-e049wm running windows 8.1 I was having some issues with it shutting down when I closed the lid even when I had it set to sleep or do nothing. I did a factory restore and after getting every thing all loaded updates and all the same issue is back. I have tried every thing even turning off hybrid sleep and still nothing.. Any ideas what's going on ? I have had this laptop a little over a year and just now started having this issue.

Hi jimbo0706. In Windows 8.1 did you set the power plan to high performance? Does the computer still shut off if you boot the machine in Safe Mode?

I tried all three power settings and it does it with all of them. Have not tried it in safe mode yet. But will try that and get back to you.

Just tried in safe mode and it shuts right down as well. But it does it as soon as I close the lid but in regular mode it takes it a while after shutting the lid before it goes off.

Does the computer shut off if you enter your laptops UEFI setup menu and close the lid?

Hi jimbo0706, Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does > When I close the lid > you have 4 options both under battery and AC Power. Neil.

I have them all set to sleep. But now when I go into reset my bios and click save and exit I am getting the error saying no Bootable device found please install a operating system. I have done a deep sweep of the disc and it came up as passed.

JFTR, "hybrid" mode is for PCs, not notebooks.

When you say it shuts down, what do you really mean? Are changes to any open documents lost? Are all your programs closed? Does chkdsk want to run when you restart?

Or when you start the system again, do you come back to where you left off?

Ok on my note book there is a setting for hybrid sleep. When I close the lid it shuts off no power at all every thing is closed out all the lights go off and I have to hit the power on button to get it back on and it starts to boot up. Only time I get the no Bootable drive to install a operating system is when I went into reset the bios settings and hit save and exit. I then power it off and back on and it boots fine. Every thing is lost when I close the lid any thing I was working on. I have to start from scratch.

Is that on your notebook, or a Windows setting? I note Windows will still show hybrid as an option when installed on notebooks even though it is for PCs. Just as Windows will show "hibernation" mode on PCs when that is really for notebooks. But for sure, the notebook maker may have integrated a hybrid mode - but again, with that, I would expect your open Word document (for example) to return when you started the notebook again.

Do the lights go off immediately? Like when you pull the power cord on a PC and the system crashes? Or do they flicker a bit suggesting Windows is "properly" and "gracefully" closing your open applications and shutting itself down.

I lose every thing. And have to start over. It's like you said if I pull the plug on a desktop have to start every thing over. It takes about 30 seconds after I close the lid to lose power.

    That's not like I said!

If you pull the plug on a PC, you instantly lose power to the computer and Windows crashes, leaving open files on the disk and potentially corrupting your hard drive. You never want your operating system to suddenly lose power because that can, and often does, corrupt the OS, and sometimes the boot drive.

Since your notebook is taking 30 seconds to "lose power" - or fully shutdown, then that is actually a good thing because it suggests Windows is "gracefully" closing out its open files and then shutting down - avoiding OS and drive corruption.

So at least, I think we have defined the problem better. Try this. Go back in the Control Panel Power Options retiredlearner mentioned and change both close lid options to Shut Down, then click save changes and exit control panel. Then reboot the computer. Then go back in the Power Options and change them back to Sleep, save changes, exit control panel and reboot again.

Then see if it works properly.

There is an internal display switch that turns off the display and initiates sleep if the display is closed while the power is on. It's located underneath the display bezel on the left side of the display. User Guide

I had to do a factory reset and clear every thing. I tried every thing you said a couple of times and it did not work. So hopefully this reset works.

Did you have Fast Startup checked with your selections? Neil.
