I have a friend that says the screen on his compaq laptop is broken internally. Only half the screen shows graphics and the other half is garbled. Is there a way to install a replacement screen on it?

mojo, You didn't say how he concluded it's broken, but if he hasn't done this already --- I'd try reinstalling the driver first. There should be a disk that came with the computer that has original uncorrupted drivers on it. Mine (Toshiba) came with its own instruction booklet. Hope that's the problem, and not something expensive to replace.

I'm not sure if the screen is replaceable, tho I think it is. I'm sure someone else has that answer.

Sounds like something other than a "broken" screen and your buddy best keep his fingers crossed. Replacement screens run $600-$800+. Argh!

    eBay

There are several "referb" companies which tear down warranty return laptops for parts.

It would also be good if you could identify who made the LCD - could be sharp, hitachi ect. - No computer company makes all its own parts. - Once you know what it is, there are lists out there that cross reference what other systems used the same part.

You may have already done it to identify the screen, but if not, pull the existing screen to get an exact mfg and model number before looking for a replacement - I've picked up a couple that were just what the spec called for and guess what - wrong screen!

I'll also take a look to see if I have what you are looking for - got a couple on hand.

    ;)

I installed a new LCD screen today and all I get is a white screen, no graphics. Data cable will only install one way, so I don't know what is wrong. Do you have any suggestions?

Replacement screen matches the old one.
