    Hi

My husband laptop no longer has the Windows update icon on the task bar and he cannot get updates when he opens Security Shield, Update. In fact, the computer freezes when he does this.

By going to the monthly Security Bulletin, he was able to download the updates listed there for Vista as a temporary fix. What can he do to get his MS updates notifications running again.

Any help will be appreciated. TIA.

    Vista Home SP2
    AMD Turion 64x2
    RAM 2 Gig

Even, We tried to follow the instructions posted above. As soon as we disabled half of the services, the Windows Update window opened and we were able to click on Check for Updates. However, that gave us an error message as follows: Windows update cannot check for updates because the service is not running, BUT the System Configuration Services Tab shows Windows Update is running. I am posting this for your consideration before proceeding further. TIA

When you check for updates ensure that both the Windows Update and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service are both set to Automatic and are Started.

Evan, I do not find Background Intelligent Transfer Service under the Services tab.

Mr. Bill, I only went as far as the first link re: clean boot.

Try resetting the Windows Update components in the second link that I posted. Hopefully that will repair the BITS service and get Windows Update working again.

Evan.I had the same problem last week. I bought a WD 1TB HDD. Used my recovery disks I made didn't work. Ordered a set of recovery disks that didn' work. Tried Fix It, then repair it myself option niether worked. Brought the HDD back and exchanged for another WD 1TB HDD that worked. Today I ordered a CRU-Data Port Drive eRazer Ultra With US Power Plug so if that problem ever arises again I'll try erasing the HDD.

Ann, let me give it a shot....

Please download Farbar Service Scanner Download Link and run it on the computer with the issue.
    • Make sure the following options are checked:
      • Internet Services
      • Windows Firewall
      • System Restore
      • Security Center/Action Center
      • Windows Update
      • Windows Defender
    • Press "Scan ".
    • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
    • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

broni, just so we are clear, should Ann try resetting the Windows Update Components first before following your advice or does it matter in this case?

The above tool will show what services, registry keys and files are missing (if).
It's better to see that data before trying anything else.

    All looks fine.

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

    Install the program then run

Go to step 2 and allow it to run Disc check

Once that is done then go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC

On the the Start Repairs tab click Start button.

Please ensure that items seen in the image below are ticked as indicated:

Click on box next to the Restart System when Finished. Then click on Start

    Hi Broni,

My husband just finished doing what you suggested above. It took him many, many loooooong hours. Some 5 minutes ago, he tested the repairs

by downloading Windows Updates,...... and it worked!!!

    Here is what happened:

Step 1 - tells you to perform a scan (Optional). Before proceeding to Step 2, he did the scanning anyway with Avast and SuperAntiSpyware. Both found no threads.

Step 2 - to run Check Disk went OK.

Step 3 - to run a System Scan and showed this message:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Please restart computer. "
Restarted computer and went on to the next step.

Step 4 - The program tells you to create Restore Point and/or ERUNT Backup, just in case. He did both...... Then went on following your instructions, and put a check mark only on those items you suggested, and the program started repairing files. After Repairing Files did it's job, Restarted the computer as instructed.

My husband then tried the Windows Update, which came out all right, but with a message like this:
"Windows Updates needs to download an Update to Windows Updates ". So he downloaded it and another message showed up asking to install the Update to the Updates. He went ahead with the installation.
When he went again to Windows Update, he got a scare because it showed it had NEVER been updated. The Updates History was empty.......

Anyway, he downloaded the Updates, with a happy result..... it worked!!! It shows 24 new updates, which we have not installed yet, waiting for your recommendations.

Now, Update History shows a whole bunch of old updates.

The whole thing took a lot of time but he is very grateful for your help.

A very big THANK YOU very much.

    Thats Great. :D

Go ahead and install the updates if you haven't already and if everything goes smoothly then I think this issue has been resolved.

Evan, updates were installed without problems. Thanks to all of you for getting him through this.

I always like to know why things happen. What could have caused this problem? Any input? TIA
