    Hi all,
I purchased a used Compaq evo 620c for my son and it works fine except for hibernation.
So I set it up for standby. Now I discovered that he has the laptop on all the time and only lets it go top stand by. He never turns it off. Does that present a problem? I used to have my desktop on all the time and never had a problem, but I have no idea if that is the same for a laptop.
    Any advice is appreciated.

Hibernation is no great loss - I avoid it like the plague. When you understand exactly what it does it has every reason to be problematic :)

I see no problem with Standby - it is configurable and I would suggest turning the screen off after 10 minutes and the hard drive - never.

The greatest strain on any electrical component is at startup so I leave my drive(s) running.

Running the screen full time will eventually lead to deterioration - no idea what the balance is between running it continuously and switching it on/off.

    Hi Pete,

    Thanks for your quick answer.
I have it configured as you suggested and it goes into standby when he closes the lid. That is why I never knew that he was in standby.
So I will leave it alone and not say anything to him.
    Thanks again
