I'm looking for help with my Toshiba Laptop A300. Operating System is Windows Vista. My laptop will only operated in Safe Mode, I have tried re-installing back to factory settings, running a diagnostics which said no problems found but if I had attached a device such as a portable music remove & restart my computer, I haven't installed anything apart from I attached a memory stick but this has been removed. I have tried everything to fix the problem. I have notice the light that blinkers next to the hard drive icon stays on when the laptop freezes, any help appreciated please?

Hi and welcome to the WindowsBBS community.

Freezes are often linked with overheating. If the cooling fins inside the laptop are blocked you will need a technician or somebody quite experienced to clean it out properly. Something that might give you an idea is that when it is first started, you should feel a good flow of air coming out of the exhaust vent.

You have reformatted (recovery to factory settings), so the drivers, software, etc, should(?) be good. Check in Device Manager (you can find it typing it into the Start Search bar) that there are no problems listed.

You can go into the BIOS (startup configuration settings) and set it to Default. I looked in the User Guide
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...3511&selCategory=2756709&selFamily=1073768663
but I couldn't see where they describe how it is done, but check Toshiba Hardware Setup p.151.

You say the LED next to the hard drive light stays on. I expect it to be the LED on the right, which is described as for the "Bridge Media Adapter ", that is the multi-purpose memory card reader. You could try disabling that adapter, you could disable it in Windows Device Manager, but I would try the BIOS or the "Hardware Setup" I mentioned.

You talk about "drives ", so you seem to feel it is a drive problem (it happens or happens most, when you connect an external drive). That's a good lead, so work on that. You can run Error Checking on all your drives except optical. Look up Error Checking in Help and Support. When you check the Windows (C: ) drive, set it to "...attempt to recover bad sectors. ", that check will run when restart the computer and might take many hours so run it overnight.

When you use external drives, do you use "Safely Remove Hardware "? (If you don't, read about it in Help and Support.)

Finally, if you want to check step-by-step you can run a Clean Boot and try to isolate the problem.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

PS Do you have plenty of space on your Windows drive? You should not let it get lower than 20% freespace.
PPS You say you have tried a lot of things, you will need to list them or go back and check that you have not missed something.

Please stick with your original thread as your last post, above, relates to that problem.

Do not start another thread when replying or when a new issue develops from your original thread otherwise continuity will be lost and you will be the loser :)

    Threads merged.

Could you please confirm the stop code 0x000086E, there is a zero missing but even with it added a search for this error does not produce any results, at least none that relate to the issue.

Can you still boot into safe mode?

In your first post you mention adding a memory stick which is now removed, why was that done?

Can you remove the hard drive and give me the make and model number?

In your first post you say you have tried everything, did that include hard drive and memory diagnostics?

What are you saying here, when you attach an external device it crashes and you have to reboot:confused:

    Please answer all the question.

Hi, I cannot boot in safe mode, the message is STOP 0x00008086.
I had attached a memory stick about an hour after attaching is the computer kept freezing and telling me if I have attached any new hardware to remove & restart, I kept trying to re-boot and ran the programme that reset my laptop back to original setting, this re-installed windows vista, it was after this my laptop stopped allowing me to re-boot and gave me this message, check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
