    In brief ....

HP Omnibook xe4100 with Belkin USB 2 PCMIA card and Basic Optical Mouse running XP Pro SP 2 fully patched.

This has been an ongoing problem for some weeks and is all the more frustrating as I am now away from home most of the time caring and rely 100% on the laptop to communicate with the outside world.

With a USB mouse plugged into the system either through the USB 1 ports on the laptop or into the USB 2 ports on a Belkin USB 2 PCMIA card the computer freezes while on the internet at random intervals. Pressing the reset button is the only way to escape. No freeze occurs when not connected to the Internet, only when working in IE online.

The drive has been reformatted to no effect. The USB ports have been uninstalled and reinstalled. A couple of optical mice have been tried.

Every combination of USB port has been tried - USB 1 with/without USB 2 card installed, USB 2 card with USB 1 ports disabled, also in combination with Touch Pad on/off. All to no avail.

Ths one beats me and I am reduced to using the touch pad - not the most ergonomic of devices.

All suggestions gratefully received - a new laptop is out of the question at the moment :(

    Hi Pete,

Have you thought about using another Browser besides IE? Maybe worth a try, at least that would either eliminate IE or confirm IE as the culprit, although I would be hard put to explain how the Browser would cause a problem like this.

Another thought, have you tried a non-optical mouse?

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

It had crossed my mind, but as MVP in IE/OE some twinges of conscience :)
Not sure that I have one, but not possible until I return home and have a search.

I haven't tried uninstalling the Belkin driver from the laptop as yet since I don't have the installation CD with me right now and I really need that USB 2 port for my external HD.

Update - the source of the problem has been found ....

Long story short - how easy it is to overlook something very basic when endeavouring to solve a problem :( In this case - the modem, or to be more precise the modem driver. Eventually decided to uninstall the modem through Device Manager - on re-installation it worked fine with no freezing and I thought no more about it until I went to Windows Update on the second Tuesday of this month and was amazed to find on offer - as a Critical Update a revised modem driver. Needless to say I declined the offer and concluded that this driver had been hidden amongst the various updats downloaded after I reformatted the laptop and was the source of the problem.

Moral of the story - as we all know - never knowingly accept a driver update from Windows Update :)
