    Hi,
    Hello from Malaysia!

Straight to my query, I had a laptop, IBM Thinkpad R40.. with WinXP SP2 installed.. I had used it for almost 2 year..Suddenly on this day, it had a problem that I had never seen before although I had managed to repair some laptop at work. So this problem is so though and I had google for some information about this problem but seem do not success. Here I attach a few information about the laptop and the problem

    Laptop:IBM Thinkpad R40
hdd:40gb [had only 4 gb left with compressed ntfs fs]
ram:512sdram dimm [checked on post.. seem ok..]
    wlan 802.11b [ok..]
    processor:centrino m 1.4 ghz [i don't know..]
    gfx card:ati radeon [ok]

    Problem

The laptop was suddenly slow down when i working with it.. so i think of waiting it if it become busy or processing some information..

Suddenly, i get a bsod.. error that i can't reproduce anymore.. it want to dump physical memory to drive.. I pressed the off button for a few second, and the laptop shut down....

After 1,2 minute, I open the laptop again. Huh, this is the problem.. the laptop was too slow processing with the hdd light was lighted continuosly[blinking for a few time only].. after about 30 minute.. the winxp progress bar come.. waiting about 15minute.. the login screen appear.. and waiting again for 15 minute for the desktop to display..What a wasting an hour....

I had a few friend told me that the probably the HDD was full.. But i wasn't.The windows itself? I don't know, since it working very nice before...
After deleting some file that i think filling the HDD most,[my personal file], i get second BSOD. this time i recorded the error code..the error code is as follows:

huh.. it was dumping to the hdd too.. hm.. i pressed the stop button again.. and the system shutdown...

BTW, i hope can get some advices on this.. i want the very valuable data on the hdd.. so please don't tell me the only solution is reformatting the hdd. the data is very valuable..

Please help me and sorry for my bad English..

    zhafir,
    Malaysia

    limap5 - Welcome to the Board :)

    0x000000F4: CRITICAL_OBJECT_TERMINATION

The definition is not very helpful in itself, but please allow the memory dump to disk when you get another BSOD, analyse it (this may be done on another computer if necessary) as outlined in this thread below and post the log in your next post in this thread ....

ok here i post the crash dump, maybe in half because i interrupt the dumping process..

Besides, this is the booting procedure that my laptop do when booted up,

1.When i pressed on button, there will be post that check ram, processor, and other.. completing in a few second
2.Next there will a blank screen with cursor blinking for a while and blank..
    3. Next it will come a white progress bar that i dont know why because there are no text there, completing about 1 minute.
    4. then there were normal winxp boot screen, a proggress bar run, normally but longer for <10 minute.
5.then there were login screen, this step were done perfectly and i don't know why it fast again.
    6. now this is the step that the worst...the startup.. takes <25 minute to be fully start (as the hdd led off)
    ----
the condition i experience when using the laptop is:

    1.copying file is extremely slow..
2.cannot defrag.. as it will never finish
3.hdd icon was not showing as usual (unknown file icon)
4.the system cannot access logical disk service..
5.cannot chkdsk, never finish and cancel automatically when set to check at startup...
6.at the moment.. if i try to query the system too much, i will get the bsod.. and dumping process will happen... as i attach here..

ok thanks.. and sorry for my bad English again..

    Malaysia

Your English is just fine and I compliment you for being so fluent :)

Unfortunately the dump log is totally corrupt as you can see and there is no useful information to be gained from it.

I think you may have a serious hardware fault - difficult to say if it is the hard drive or some other component. If the memory is at fault you can check it using Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool which runs from a floppy or from a CD before the computer boots into Windows. You may need access to another computer to prepare the floppy or CD as your computer may be unable to do it now.

If you know the make and model of the hard drive you can download disk diagnostic software from the manufacturer's web site.

Your first priority should be to back up your important data before it is too late. Can you do this, even slowly?

If you can do that the next step depends very much on which sort of XP CD you have. If it is a full copy then I would attempt a repair of XP, but if it is a Recovery disk the only option you have is to run it to restore the system to the state it was in when you bought the laptop. Note that this will format the drive and everything on it now will be wiped out. If the problem is with hardware then repairing/re-installing is unlikely to be successful.

You should consider seeking local professional advice to sort out this problem - do you know of a good repair shop?

    Hi Pete C,

Thank you very much for your information. As you told me, I am slowly backup the files that I have on the disk, approx. 15GB..I do it slowly and stready, :) [as now only 2GB had been backup:( ]. It all my fault not to allow the dump take process. I had learnt to take care of my laptop gently :) .

I also think about the HDD and memory problem..although physically they didn't look damaged. Before this I had also experience this problem but that time my memory broken [overheat or overuse [too much volt]]. Btw, I feel a little bit disappointed because I just use the new wireless router that I had bought to make my laptop connected to the Internet.:) .

I will also contact my friend who was a computer technician. Thanks again for your help..

    zhafir,
    Malaysia.

Suggest you delete, using shift+delete, after marking with ctrl+a the files in documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp and documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temporary internet files and repeat for all users. Also do the same for the windows\prefetch folder.

    That should speed you up.

Thanks for your advice sparrow! Actually, I do clean my laptop after the startup. I had sent the laptop to the authorized personnel for IBM now. I ask them not to reformat the system and they will check for the problem. I wonder why the system [boot process and startup] take so much time...

    BTW, thanks again sparrow!
