Have a problem with a laptop HDD. I have an interface to connect this Hard Drive to a desk top PC. when I connect it and start computer, it goes to MS Windows 95 start up menu requesting Safe Mode and then it shows this message: While initializing device IOS:
Windows Protection error. You need to restart your computer.

I restart and it goes through the same loop! Where do I go from here? Neil.

Your pc is attempting to boot off the drive that is full of all the wrong drivers.

Do you still have your original system drive in the pc? It needs to be jumpered to Master with the pins on the back side of the drive.

Hi Steve, I disconnected the Desktop PC Hard Drive IDE cable and Power plug. I then connected the 2.5 HD via the 44 - 40 adapter to the IDE cable and connected the power plug to the adapter. In other words the 2.5 HD is the only HD connected to the M/B. It starts - POST beep - then goes to load Win95 and shows the error message in my first post. I had in fact installed Win95 on this 2.5 HD using this adapter some months ago and I gave up on it when it wouldn't start. I'm having another play to try and see if it will work, hence my post. Thanks Neil.

You understand about drivers don't you?

If you intend on leaving the drive in the desktop and run Win95, we should be able to get that to work...

If you're wanting to install Win95 and then put the drive back in the laptop, you'll run into the same/opposit problem you have now.

Does the laptop have a floppy and or cd drive that work?

Steve, when I load Win95 to the HD, aren't the drivers loaded at the same time? Do you mean that the M/B would have to be altered to run the Win95 HD? The laptop is only running a FDD. It has no CD ROM. That is why I thought I could load the Win95 to the 2.5 HD using my Desktop CD and then install the 2.5 HD back into the laptop. If this is not possible please tell me whether I'm wasting my time. I have transferred a 3.5 HD with Win98 SE into another PC by disconnecting the IDE and power connector from it's HD (which was running XP) and it worked. Neil.

If you install win95 on your desktop it will install drivers for the desktop that won't come close to matching the laptop...

You can bootup the desktop with its original drive.
Format the 2.5 inch drive with FAT32
Copy the Win95 folder to the 2.5 inch drive

    Put drive back in latop.
Boot the laptop with a win98 bootdisk.
( www.bootdisk.com has the needed files)
After booting off the floppy, change the directory to Win95 and type Setup.exe to start the install.

Steve, I managed to get Win98 installed through the interface adapter onto the 2.5 HDD and put it into the laptop and it's all working. I went to the extra trouble of taking the keyboard assy out and renewed the CMOS battery and shorted the contacts to reset the BIOS. I now have a working Compaq Contura 410 Notebook. All I need to do tomorrow is to put the MS games into it. Many thanks for your help. Neil :D

there is a software conflict somewhere
The fact that is goes into windows shows the hard drive should be fine
See if you can take out or disable devices in the device manager
    Reboot let it install
You may need to have the windows 95 install disc handy
I am not totally familiar with 95 just 98/me

visionof, just to clear the air. I had an adapter that enabled me to connect the 2.5 HD into the IDE cable on my desktop PC. I had formatted and been able to install Win98 onto this drive. I think there was probably a problem with a password and taking the keyboard out and renewing the CMOS battery and shorting the terminals in the laptop, helped to get things sorted out. This is a notebook unit of early design and it hasn't any CD ROM drive or Modem. It has FDD and PCMCIA. The battery was dead but it is quite happy being powered by the charger unit. From the termination on the rear you are able to connect an outside Monitor, keyboard, mouse and printer. I believe there was also a docking unit available for it. It's just been something to play with in spare time, as the challenge was to get it going. When I bought it on Trademe NZ it had had the HD wiped and the original OS was lost. I feel I have achieved something as it challenges us old guys who are retired and need something to do when the weather isn't fine enough to get out and play GOLF. My grandsons will be able to practice to their hearts content and we won't have to worry about Trojans,Spam,Viruses or parental guidance. Thanks to you all for your guidance and helpful suggestions. Neil. :D:cool:
