When I purchased my Compaq computer several years ago, it came with Widows 98 installed. I was very happy with this programme, as I could work easily in English and Portuguese. I have recently had some work done (privately) on my computer, as the memory was no longer sufficient. When I got it back, I was surprised to find that I was no longer able to access the English spell check, grammar or thesaurus and I don't have the CD that I am instructed to install. Is it possible to update this programme on line or will I need to purchase a CD? Although comfortable with Portuguese, most of my work is in English, so I would appreciate some advice.

The features you describe (spellcheck, thesaurus and grammar) are features of office software....either Microsoft Office or Works or some other office suite.

I don't quite understand how a memory upgrade would mess with the programs installed so you might want to ask the person who did the work on your computer exactly what was done.

If your office programs are gone (look through the Start Menu for them) and if no CDs were shipped with your Compaq to reinstall them, then, yes, you will probably have to buy a new copy.
