    Hey everyone,

I was having some internet issues and was hoping someone could resolve them.

My Windows XP using an ethernet cable to internet port (in the wall of a college dormroom) was working yesterday just fine, but when I turned it back on from Sleep, the internet and online games were not working. Mozilla Firefox displays the message "server not found." I've talked to three different technicians at my college dorm, and they can't figure it out because their programs at the office say they can see that my computer is connected and should be working. It isn't a hardware problem or cable problem, because the ethernet cable attached to the port of the tower is lighting up green and is flashing. The Local Area Connection Status is 'connected' and speed is 100.0 Mbps. Activity shows that packets are being sent and received.

    Things I have tried:
    1) Used PC in another room. Result: internet works.
    2) Manually connected laptop to the same internet port my PC is connected to while turning off the wireless internet. Result: internet works on laptop.
    3) Typed in 'ping www.google.com' in the command prompt, it says "Ping request could not find host www.google.com. Please check the name and try again. "
    4) Typed in 'ipconfig /all' in the command prompt. All components are listed except for 'Primary DNS Suffix,' which has a blank space next to it.
    5) Under Internet Protocol Properties in Local Area Connection, I made sure that IP address and DNS server addresses are obtained automatically.
    6) I reset my WinSock using the 'netsh winsock reset' and restarted my computer which didn't do anything.
    7) I ran Malwarebytes anti-virus on the PC, which was downloaded today from a friend's computer and transferred via flash drive. The scan found 3 Trojan viruses and another virus. I removed the files and the internet is still not working.
    8) Turned off and turned on firewall.

I hope I didn't mess anything up doing some of these, as I was just looking at suggestions I found when I googled the problem....

Hopefully someone can help. Thanks for your time.

Does rebooting the machine clear up the loss of internet?
If so - look in device manager->eithernet adaptor and disable the power saver option.

    Thanks for responding Steve.

I'm sorry but no, rebooting the computer does not help the problem.

Those virus infections may have corrupted some system files so try this.

Click "Start" type sfc /scannow in the search box (note the gap before the /) and hit enter. This may take a while to run and should repair any damaged files in the OS, you may need to use the OS disc if it asks for it.

If that doesn't improve things I would try uninstalling the Ethernet driver via Device Manager. Check the details of the device as listed in Device Manager and (with another PC) download a new driver from the manufacturers site to a flash drive. Go to Device Manager, select the device and then select Update Driver, follow the prompts to find the driver on the flash drive and install it.

Let us know how you get on.

Please supply the make and model number of your PC.

so i typed "sfc /scannow" in the search box. it said "search is complete there are no results to display" and the internet still doesn't work.

I will try to uninstall the ethernet driver via device manager, (not really sure how but i'll figure it out).

my computer was custom built a few years ago so i'm not exactly sure of the make and model number

When you tried to run sfc /scannow how long did it take. The reply you got makes me think you didn't type it in correctly and it has just searched for the file. It should take a good ten minutes to run. Type it exactly as written but not with quotation marks.

    sfc /scannow

Locate the ethernet device in Device Manager, double click on it and a box will open with a number of tabs, click on Driver and you will see the button to uninstall. You will need to go here again to select Update Driver when you are ready to reinstall it.

Thank you very much for your help and concern. I had an internet technician come in and he figured out the problem. I live on a college campus and supposedly someone messed with the router that I'm hooked up to and he told me it had something to do with a DHCP server setting or something like that. Thanks for your help though!
