Laggy Start up/Shut down/Restart?!?!

Recently my HP Pavilion zv6000 has been having problems starting up and shutting down! It happened once before and I believe a system restore or reformat fixed it but I am not looking forward to that. The problem is when i start up or restart my computer is really slow and the sound seems to lag out (really choppy) and I have no clue why, it started when I tried a disk defrag. and when that said some files cannot be moved so it was incomplete and when I restarted that began... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Run chkdsk http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx with the /r switch.

tried that at stage 4 of 5 got to 8% & didnt move for an hour and a half so i tried again got to about 8 and shut off on restart kept shutting off trying again now ill let it go all night...

I would say you have a bad hard drive.

Download and run the HD diagnostic software from the manufacturer's site.
