If you miss the "X" on a single tab in FF3.5, here is a solution I got from a guest at Mozillazine:

    " Post Posted 11 Jul 2009 01:47 pm
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4227
after installing, Customize the toolbar, by dragging the icon , Close All Tabs up into the toolbar & dropping thereon "

I'm probably missing the obvious here but can I ask...

If it's only a single tab, what is the problem with a no close tab icon?

In FF 3.5, there is no "X" in a single tab to close it out and get a new tab in one click. One must first open a new tab before closing the current tab. For me, this is an annoyance.

With so many browsers fighting for our attention, we can be picky.

I must ask, Wildfire and broni, how did you get an avatar up? I have been looking all over the CP pages for where to do this, I have an avatar I would like to use, I can not find wher to do it.

You need to be over certain number of posts level.
I don't remember what the number is.
    Someone will chime in here.

    TabMixPlus provides it.

Doesn't the home button provide that function? Richard you're probably using FF different from me but I've never seen the need to close a tab before opening another. Sorry but I'm still confused.

A good thing in my opinion, I may not understand your problem but it keeps the developers on their toes which can only help user demands and competition ;)

Have a read of the FAQ...

    Specifically

I did not use an Avatar, but noted that CP has an Edit Avatar, and I added one which was on my computer (independent of the Signature) . But "broni" may be correct, about the number of posts.

For me security is the reason to want that close button in single tab.

After visiting my bank or credit card account, I always close the current tab & open a new one. This was ok in the previous versions but suddenly FF 3.5 changes that.

It is a difficult problem to comprehend. I, either. have tab(s) or not. In any event, closing a tab does not enhance security. Only exiting or deleting cache will. In fact, a number of bank advise that the browser be closed. As I alluded to, before, it is a non-problem for me, as I use a Home group of Tabs. With my settings, I, either, open an additional tab, which can be closed, or open a new window in an existing, which is not as good.
In my tests, I was able to determine that only if one opens the browser with no tabs, and then open one, there may be an issue. I tested this with 3.5, but did not with 3.0.11. It is a personal preference issue which would be encountered by a few people. Obviously annoying, if one is used to it, and 3.0.11 was ok.

    rsinfo-

My thoughts exactly. But, there is no longer any reason for a problem. Just go up to my first post in this thread and get the extensikon provided by the link.

I am already suffering from extensionitis & adding any more extensions would drown my FF. I think I would pass it & live with what FF 3.5.1 provides for the time being.

I'm with broni about using Tab Mix Plus (TMP). It provides numerous tab options, such as the ability to make tabs a specific width, to have multiple rows of tabs, and to have a close button on the last tab.

TMP didn't always provide the single tab close button option. It was added at my request, because I always have the tab bar showing, and wanted the ability to blank the last remaining tab ... the resulting blank tab doesn't have a close button, but it doesn't need one, IMO.

If one doesn't want to install TMP, though, there is a work-around ... type about:blank in the address bar, then create a bookmark for the blank page.

I understand what rsinfo means about having "extensionitis ", having had as many as 35 installed at one time. I'm currently down to 27, but the two I can't live without are TMP and MR Tech Toolkit, which is the ultimate extension manager.

True. I use a blank page as my home page but, because I use highly customized tool and menu bars (see screenshot), I've removed the "home" button.

Strangely believe it, when I installed FF3.5.1 on my two XP machines, that big red X appeared in the tool bar with no added extension. I had to do it on the Vista machines, or maybe since I had done it with 3.5 it was just not necessary at 3.5.1.
