    Thanks for reading.
I am a beginner, so I will explain the problem the best I can.

When using IE, I am unable to use the keyboard arrows to scroll up or down. I can use the arrows at times if I hit F7 first, however,I need to hit F7 every time I click off that page. The way I have been scrolling is by placing the mouse on the up/down arrows on the window it self and this is obviously more time consuming.

I have narrowed it down to it's an IE challenge because tonight I just installed fire fox and when using that browser I can scroll using the arrows.

Any help in correcting this is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Possible helpful details:

    My OP system is vista.

3 weeks ago, I installed an updated version of IE toolbar (which I think was a beta IE 8 version if that makes sense because I previously had IE 7) and that is when this problem occurred.

I did try to uninstall the new toolbar but when I did so, I was no longer able to view: file, edit, history, bookmarks etc. and was unable to do anything and did a system restore to get the toolbar back.)

    Let's just clarify a few points first :) ....

It sounds like you installed IE8 beta 2, not an IE toolbar.

You rolled back to IE7 by uninstalling IE8. In IE7 the menu bar you mention 'file, edit, history, bookmarks etc' is not shown by default. You must right click in a blank area at the top of thr screen and click on 'Menu Bar'.

I cannot offer any suggestions as to why your up/down arrows no longer work in IE7, but wonder why you do not simply use the scroll wheel on the mouse - unless you are using a laptop?

Do the up/down arrows work for scrolling in other documents such as Word or Adobe Reader? If they do not there may be a problem with the keyboard driver.

Post the make and model no. of your laptop as I can check for available drivers, if any.

Do you not have a scroll facility on your laptop touch pad?

    Thanks for reading.

    Peter,
I will be back to you shorly with the other information but if it helps you.
The scroll key works fine in abode and with my word processor and also work fine with google chrome and fire fox. It's just that for various reasons prefer IE and IE is the one place I have this problem. As stated, the scroll arrows do work if I hit F7 first. However, I need to hit this command every time I change a page.
    Thanks,
    Thomas

As you have no problems using the up/down keys in other documents the problem in IE is unlikely to be caused by the keyboard driver, so we can pass on that.

As to why it is not working in IE I really have no idea, but I would like you to confirm which version of IE you are using ....

In IE - Help > About Internet Explorer - all I want to know is if it is 6, 7, or 8 - version no. not required.

As far as Caret Browsing is concerned (F7) I cannot find reference to it in IE7 and F7 does not do anything for me in IE 7 in XP or Vista.

However in IE8 F7 brings up a Caret Browsing dialogue box with an option to enable for new windows and tabs.

That would explain why you see Caret Browsing at F7.

As IE8 is beta software I suggest you uninstall it through Add/Remove programs and revert back to IE7 until the final version of IE8 is released. However it may be that the scrolling function via the arrow keys is not included in IE8 - it does not appear to work on my computer running XP Pro SP3 with IE8 beta2. Not a problem to me as it is a desktop and I use the scroll button on the mouse.

If anyone else has this problem.
Keep in mind that I have Vista and needed to go under programs and feauters and then needed to go into "updates installed" to remove this toolbar.
