    My sys is W2K Pro

    The Problem:
AT startup, I keep getting error msgs :

    1.)
" Cannot find the file 'BFRECV.EXE' (or one pf its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. "

    Action taken.
I did Start> Search> For Files or Floders
and deleted the few references found.
No application or .exe files were found/deleted.

    2.)
" Cannot load or run 'BFRECV.EXE' specified file in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the references to it in the registry. "

    Action taken.
I did Regedit Search and deleted the 3 - 4 entries found under, Internet Explored >
    Explorer Bars>
    {C4EE31F3-4768-11D2- } > FilesNamedMRU

But after I did ALL the Above, I STILL get these SAME TWO Startup error Msgs!
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW do I LOCATE & Remove the References to 'BFRECV.EXE' that STILL pops up at startup ?

    Check your win.ini (in winnt folder), system.ini, autoexec.nt, autoexec.bat and startup group(s).

Download StartupCPL to check your Run registry keys.

    17 Mae 2002 Reply.

I already have StartupCLP and Monitor.

It does not show the file 'BFRECV.EXE' that the startup Error Msg keeps popping up and referring to.

I ran the Command Line Commands:

    Win.ini
    System.ini
    Autoexec.bat
    Autoexec.nt

and the file 'BFREC.EXE' was Not listed in neither one .

    In the Command mode Line:
    Run | autoexec.bat command brought up D:\BITWARE\
but Start |search | Files or Folder | Bitware Bringsup NOTHING.

    And "autoexec.nt" command bringsup
'not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file'
    ----------------------------------------------------------

    More suggestions please.

    Be careful deleting files.

You could end up with several more problems unless you take care when deleting files. It's much better to rename them, easier to recover from that when Windows won't boot.

As to the file being called, I suspect that is associated with your modem and the problem may fade if you will delete the reference to the modem in Device Manager and reboot so Windows can reinstall it. Worth a shot.

    Good luck

    BITWARE

I got several hits using Bitware on a GOOGLE search. Check 'em out. Perhaps you'll have to contact them for instructions concerning deleting calls for their product after it has been improperly uninstalled.

Otherwise you will have to do some severe Registry and drive file searching to eliminate all references to that dog.

    Good luck

Edit I wish you had StartUpLog It works great for things like this although I'm not sure it'll work in 2k. It lists all the startup areas and what is being called from them.

There are at least ten or eleven places in Windows for start up calls to come from such as:

    1) the startup folder

    2) the load= and run= lines in win.ini

    3) The Run, RunOnce, RunOnceEx,RunServices and RunServicesOnce keys
    under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

    4) The Run and RunOnce keys under
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\

    5) subkeys (Static VxDs) under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\

    6) the [386enh] and [boot] sections of system.ini (this includes the
scrnsave.exe= line in SYSTEM.INI which can be used to run things on your
    system (like the infamous McafeeScreenScan))

    7) the IOSUBSYS folder (drivers)

    8) the VMM32 folder (drivers that take precedence over those built into
    VMM32.VXD

    9) Config.sys

    10) Autoexec.bat

    11) Winstart.bat

    Thanks for the feedback.

Now do yourself a favor, go get that freeware progam StartupLog that I linked in the post. It would have shown you all those locations without all the vermin hunting you had to do.

You'll have to have it on your c:\ drive before it will work. It won't run from the floppy. When you run it it will take a few seconds (you'll see a dos box) and then when it finishes, it'll go to a notepad session and show you the report. If you close that screen, you'll find a text file on your Desktop with the same contents.

Post back if it still doesn't work.

EDIT, Update, It WILL run from a floppy after all. I'm afraid the problem may be that it isn't compatable with XP. I'm running 95 so can't tell. I know it works on my 98 as well.

    Hi,

Did so, and it won't work on my W2K Pro.

I was able to Screen Capture the DOS window when I Double clicked on its File to attempt instal.

    It had an error msg,

    Header said "Start-up Log- version 01.56 "

    Error Msg part,
"Startup Log for Windows 95/98- Freeware by rmbox

    Invalid directory
    File creation error
    filecreation error

    An aside.
Did you install the "Security fix "
and Disable the Raw Socket feature on XP .

I'm sorry Curtis I gave you a bum steer there. StartUpLog isn't compatible with XP but the utility that Unixfan linked, StartupCPL, will do the job for you.

Thanks for the link you supplied, I'll take a look at it soon.
