When I leave my computer for an extended time it goes into sleep mode. When I return and move the mouse it wakes up again. If I then click on an application with the mouse it opens up that program. However, if I have occasion to type something into a dialogue box or compose an email I cannot get my keyboard to produce any lettering. I've unplugged the mouse and keyboard plugs and reinserted them but that didn't resolve the problem. Eventually I have to restart the computer in order to get the keyboard to function, which it does without any problem - until I let it go automatically into sleep mode again. What might be happening here and what might be the solution?

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks, retiredlearner. I did as you suggested and was informed that no windows integrity violations had been found.

Later on today, as things go into sleep mode, I'll check to see if the problem persists and report back.

There were two further suggestions in the Windows article which I'll also try, namely waking the computer up with the keyboard rather than the mouse or by going into Keyboard Hardware Properties - Power Management and then removing the tick from "Allow this device to wake the computer ". I'll see how that goes today and report back.

Thanks for pointing me towards that Windows Support article. Over the years I have found this forum (WindowsBBS) the most beneficial and supportive place in my computer experience. Indispensible really. ;)

My son was always into Google and he has the knack of using the right words to locate the info.
Most of our Moderators here seem to advise Google as your best friend first, but it depends on wording your enquiry correctly. Neil.

Well all seems to be well now. I went into Control Panel>keyboard>check keyboard status>hardware>properties>change settings>power management>tick 'allow this device to wake the computer'. Now I don't have to move the mouse to wake the computer. I've awoken the computer several times today with any key and found that each time I was able to use the keyboard and mouse normally in typing dialogue into anything afterwards.

Thanks everyone - and yes, Google was a useful resource also, provided the question was worded clearly. :)
