There's conflicting information on this update:

    According to the article KB942840

According to the details at http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=KB942840 (click the link to the left for the details)

Now, which is correct? The quote above is a translation from swedish. Does the english version provide the same conflicting information? (I can't get Microsoft Update Catalog in english!)

    H Christer,

When I click on the more info get the no replacement statement http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942840

This is from IE7 Vista if that has any bearing on this which I don't think is the case.

Also looked at the versions for X64 and 2003 server - takes you to the same page.

    Hi Charles!

Yes, that's the same page as my first link but when downloading from Microsoft Update Catalog, it says that KB917344 is replaced.

It doesn't matter right now but if I can get KB917344 off of my "Updates CD" ... ... then unneccesary updates will not be installed on clean installations.

I went empirical on the issue and rolled back (using Ghost) to a date prior to the installation of KB917344. Next step was a session at Microsoft Update and among all the updates offered was KB942840 but not KB917344. I take that as the information in the article KB942840 is false but the information at Microsoft Update Catalog is correct.

It's more complicated than that. Today, I installed a system from square one. XP SP2 had IE7 and WMP11 installed from CD and also all known updates from my collection on CD. I skipped KB917344 and when I attempted to install KB942840 a popup told that the update was not for that browser. When I went to Microsoft Update for the first time, I was only offered the updates for WMP11 which I didn't have pre-downloaded.

    Conclusion based on empirical tests:

    A system with IE6 needs KB942840 which replaces KB917344.

A system with IE7 needs none of the above updates.
