I'm getting a friend's laptop with Dell W7 Home ready to upgrade to W10. I have run Malwarebytes, MSE, ESET on line and the machine came up clean. There have been no problems.

However, when I checked the Windows Updates, I found the Security Update for Windows (KB3072633) has failed to install a number of times since July 20. I manually downloaded the update from the Microsoft site and it failed to install. I then installed the Microsoft W7 Fixit, but neither the automatic update nor the manual download would install.

I noted that the automatic Windows 10 upgrade failed a number of times beginning on August 29. It appears that it quit trying on September 9.

Am I correct in trying to get the security updates all installed before I start the upgrade or would it be OK to go ahead with an update to W7 not installed?

I performed a search of installed updates and KB3072633 was installed on 07-15-2015. Try performing a search for that update. Control Panel\Windows Update. In the lower left corner click on Installed Updates. I had an that same thing happen only with a different update. It was installed. So I uninstalled it. Let MS detect the update again reinstalled it and the failed message stopped showing.

No luck. I checked and that update wasn't installed.

    Any other suggestions?

    Evan,

I did the clean boot operation and still couldn't get the update to install. I downloaded and installed the Readiness Tool and restarted the laptop. I assumed that there was a tool I was supposed to run but couldn't find anything. Is the download and install all that is necessary?

I clicked on the "Get Windows 10" icon by the clock and got a message that the computer was ready to go and that everything was compatible. Any other suggestions or tips.

Hi Robert, Did you 'Run' or 'Save' the SURT download? It will need to be 'opened' and Run I would think. Neil.

    Neil,

I saved the download and then opened it and installed it. Like I said, after the installation showed as complete, there were no further instructions. The dialog box simply said "Installation Complete ". I restarted the computer but nothing popped up for me to run.

That is what is supposed to happen. Are you focusing on upgrading the Windows 7 system to Windows 10? If so then don't use the Windows Update method. Download and run the Media Creation Tool for Windows 10 and you can upgrade to Windows 10 at your own pace instead of being persuaded through Windows Update.

If you are unsure about upgrading to Windows 10 then you should read through this article first, Windows 10 is Great, Except for the Parts That Are Terrible.

    Thanks Evan and Neil,

I have put the W 10 upgrade on hold for the time being to get the laptop back to the owner so she can have use of it for a while. I was familiar with the article you linked to and I will go over it again. I will probably create an ISO of the Media Creation Tool as I anticipate I will be doing some more upgrades of W7 to W10. I have already done a couple.

I guess I am back to the question in the first post, am I at risk proceeding with the W 10 upgrade knowing that I have the W7 Security Update that fails to install?

No you are not at any additional risk with installing Windows 10 without that security update. Is the KB3072633 update the only update that does not install?

Not that I could determine. There were several failed updates in the list but all the others seemed to eventually install successfully - except for the W10 upgrade.

Alright then. Do you have any other concerns that I could help you with or would you consider this thread resolved?

All done unless I run into some more problems. If I do, I will start a new thread. Thanks for the help.
