has anybody ever had this trouble with the junk mail controls in 7.1 ? The trouble is! I can't get to move the junk mail to the trash! and when I go into the controls and set it all up! then close it, all the settings revert back to what they were befor ! I think this all started after installing norton anti virus 2004 but Im not sure. I had everything working fine and had trained it! but this just happened! also all my filters went on the blink and had to reset all of them Thanks for any input

    Welcome to the Forum sutsujsti!

    Hi sutsujsti,

I have an idea your NAV2004 is definitely the culprit. Does your ISP screen for viruses? If so, you don't need the NAV Email Protection. I have an older version of NAV, but I imagine that the settings are similar. Look in your "Options" under Email Protection and see what is enabled there. This is probably what has conflicted with the Netscape Junk Mail controls.

thats what I thought, But I have stopped it from loading at start up and disabled email protection and it still does the same thing! I really dont want to uninstall both of them and reload! the last time I went through saving all my prefrences and reloading it was a pain! I saved all of my email and other stuff(to a cd) just like you had told others to do But when I reinstalled from the back up all the file attrubutes were read only! what a pain to find them all and change them Maby it will be easear with XP than 98 .!!!! I dont have a floppy in the xp computer But maby a cd rw will do the job better than cd-r
the junk mail controls will mark it but it will not send it to the trash I have to do it manually and when I go to change the settings it will let me do it but when i close down and re open they are back to the orriginal settings if you have any other sugestions please let me know Thanks

    sutsujsti,

When you save your Profile data from a Windows 98 OS, you should Zip the files first. This prevents files from being converted to "Read Only ". Supposedly this doesn't happen with Windows XP, but to be on the safe side, you might want to zip your Profile data before burning to CD. Whether it's CD-RW or CD-R shouldn't matter.

When you reinstall Netscape, this has no effect on your Profile, and it will remain untouched. However, don't uninstall anything yet. Let's do some more investigating first.

Is this how your JMC setting looks: Screen Shot

Netscape 7.1 is somewhat flawed when it comes to retaining settings. I can recall having problems with certain settings, but NOT the JMC. I also wonder if you have other filters set up? Those filters will take precedence over the JMC.

Have you tried totally disabling NAV 2004, and if so, then can you reset the JMC, and are the settings retained?

Let me do some searching for others having this type of problem. There are quite a few threads on the JMC not working, in the Netscape 7.1 NG, but I haven't seen anyone reporting problems with settings not being retained.

Yes thats how mine looks, yes I tried totally diabling nav and it still does the same thing I also disabled all 20 of my filters! in fact thats how I figured out somthing was wrong the first thing I noticed was a warning (the filter xxx could not find the folder xxx so it will be disabled) ! so I had to go to all of my filters and point them to the right folder; thay seem to be working ok now ! Now when I open jmc and uncheck(enable junk mail controls ) then close it and re open it, its back to the was it was checked enabled. I even unchecked all of my filters and that had no affect !

    sutsujsti,

This must be incredibly frustrating for you. This could be a corrupt file somewhere, and the first place I would look is the prefs.js file.

    Delete these files/folder

    history.dat file
    XUL.mfl file
    Cache folder
    C:\WINDOWS\temp files

This is basically daily maintenance, but if you haven't deleted the above in a while, then it may help, and especially the XUL.mfl file.

    sutsujsti,

The error you received when attempting to open the prefs.js file indicates that Windows Scripting Host is currently set up as the default application to open *.js files. The error occurs because prefs.js isn't a Windows Script file. Use Notepad to edit the file instead.

Before editing the prefs.js file, you must first ensure that Netscape is closed. Backing up the file prior to editing is extremely important.

Launch Notepad, go to the File menu, select Open, and navigate to the prefs.js file. Make your edit, then save the file. Ensure that you know exactly what you're doing before attempting the edit.
