I did not know what else to name this post as this is MY VERY FIRST encounter with a possible Virus infection.

Last evening I ran my weekly system scan with AVG. It found nothing. As far as I know it is up to date.

I then ran my weekly on-line scan with Tren-Micro. It reported the Following

Java ByTever A in the Java Section of Documents & settings. It reported as being unable to clean as the 2 files were in use.

Ran RAV on-line Scan with same results.

After writing down the location etc. I then shut down and restarted Windows. Opened PowerDesk. Worked my way to the location and deleted the two files.

Restarted Windows. Ran all three scans again and reports were clean.

Now I am working my way through the ( printed out ) instructions from
    Here

I do see one thing in that list that I have already implemented. System Restore is already shutdown.

Is there anything else I need to do ?

    Hi BB,

Is there anything else I need to do ?

About this particular incident, no. Is this Sun's Java? If it is, was the Java subfolder name "jar "? That folder contains web images, and AFAIK, once you delete them, that's the end of the matter.

I took Java off in the process of installing SP2 and haven't bothered re-installing it so I can't check for sure the folders and their names.

    Regards - Charles

Open the Java Plug-in in the control panel, click the cache tab and then clear. That will clear all Jar files. Check the version on the about tab, and verify it is version 1.4.02_6. Update from the Sun Java Website if needed (the update feature within the plug-in never seems to work for me).

Me either evidently. I just checked and had v5. Clicked on the update button and it said I was up to date. Got v6 from their web site.

Thanks Dave. Never noticed that little glitch before.

You bet, Newt. I noticed it some time back and have since recommended updating right from the website. Another good reason to fix the update run item when present in a HJT log. ;)

    Thanks to all.

and verify it is version 1.4.02_6.

It wasn't but it is now.

I had un-install the existing TWO different installs and download the full OFFLINE install.

Things are looking much better now.
