I have win98se, and netscape 6.2. Often when on a site and the java icon shows up in the taskbar by the clock, the page freezes and I have to click the reset button on the computer to get out of it. Or there will be an error message about java jar40 or something similar. Is there a place to update java or are there different javas? Thanks:confused:

    Hi Kaz,

Web pages not displaying well in Mozilla or Netscape 6, is because the page uses proprietary browser features and doesn't provide equal support for web standards. You can contact the webmaster by email, or take it a step further, as described HERE

I'll have to do more research on the Java Jar40 error. That is usually associated with Netscape 4.x and Windows 95. Let me look around and see what I can find. I'll get back to you on that.

You can get upgrades for the SUN Java plug-in at the SUN site:
    1.3.0.01a
    http://java.sun.com/products/archive/index.html
    1.3.1.02
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/

    HTH,

    Hi,
I have windows 98SE and I'm using Netscape 4.79. My computer is freezing up when I'm veiwing a card site. Java starts to load and it freezs up and I to have reboot to get out of the site. At the bottom in the tool bar. it reads Starting Java.. Done. But the page never fully loads and then I get this freez up. I uninstalled and reinstalled. Netscape. But, I'm still having the same problem. Help Please!! Could this be something in windows and not Netscape?

Hi Ruth01, and welcome to the Forum!

I would say that it is as I stated in my above post to Kaz. A proprietary code is being used on the card page, and it isn't for Netscape!

Java is always slow to load the first time you access a page containing Java Applets, because Netscape needs to load the Java Interpreter (Java Virtual Machine). However, you can load the Java Interpreter when you start Netscape by adding following command line:
    -start_java

    Close Communicator
Right click the NS Desktop icon
    Select "Properties "
    Click the "Shortcut" Tab
To the command line add -start_java

    It should look something like:
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\netscape.exe" -start_java

This may or may not help, but here's hoping!

Wouldn't disabling Java from Netscape Preference will do the job? (speeding up loading and not having "coffee" icon next to the clock)
