I am not sure if I posted this in the right section or not—moderator please change if I haven’t.

    I am running XP Pro SP2 & IE 7.

I cannot get Java to Run or Open Applets in IE7. I’ve tried everything I could think about and read about and still no luck. I removed Java COMPLETELY –both using the ADD & Remove program in the control panel & the REVO Uninstaller. Cleaned all the files by doing a Search & checking Windows Explorer--

Downloaded Java again several times both the Online way & Offline way. With & without the Firewall being active.

Checked everything Java Suggests to enabled it—
    1. Enable Java through your Web browser
    2. Enable Java through the "Java Plug-in Control Panel"
    3. Clearing your Web Browser Cache

The Control Panel & the Add & Remove program in the control panel say I have Java installed—even have the “Coffee Cup” icon shows in the Control panel.

The Java site still shows it not working in it’s TEST SITE.

The site I’m am trying to access Java Program tells me I have—

Java version 1.6.0.16 is installed & enabled correctly. The system should function normally.

I know the site I am trying to access is working correctly because I have called their IT people and they can access the site using my password—I can also access the site & the Java part I need on my laptop running Vista.

Please some suggestion/help—I need this for my work & I’m losing my mind.

    Thank you,
    Paul

Delete the entries under the below locations
%Program Files%\Java\jre6\%APPDATA%\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_10\ and make sure the directories are empty.
Restart the internet explorer then you will be able to install Java without any issue

shreemaya, thank you for the response.
The only file that I found that was close to the one you sent me was under the WINDOW EXPLORER tree under SUN named JRE1.6.0-16 & when I clicked it open a file called IZMA.dll was there. I did not remove as I wasn't sure it was the right one.

There is also a JAVA FILE under PROGRAM FILES and in it is a file that is tiltled JRe6 but when I click on that and open it on the right almost a whole page of files appear and I didn't want to clear so many.

I have searched and opened EVERY FOLDER in that tree and looked specifically under the APPLICATION FOLDERS (because I just had problem with an HP Printer & had to clear all the APPLICATION FILES) and that was the only 2 I found close to what you suggested.

I know that Java is working on my computer for some programs as I can access--LIVE TIMING SITES for racing venues that are using JAVA and the the JAVA ICON appears in the taskbar by the clock.

What bothers me is when I go to the JAVA D/L site it tells me
"OOPS you have the wrong Version installed you need VERSION 6 "--- then it tells me to D/L a version that is already showing as installed on my Control Panel.

I removed all previous versions of Java several times using a program call "Revo Uninstaller" which clears deep registry entries & loaded Java both by the ONLINE method & the OFFLINE method---and still can't get the applet to show when I go to the JAVA site that says--
How do I test whether Java is working on my computer? underneath the MISSING Applet it gives me 3 suggestions for help to get JAVA to work--I have checked all 3 several times to no avail.

I have even done a SEARCH under the START program and nothing comes up for that file you gave me.

Am I looking in the WRONG PLACE?

I would appreciate any more suggestions or ideas you may have. Last week I had to take a test online and it was using some form of JAVA for the test--I could not open it on my desktop.

I know the site was good because I have a laptop also running Vista SP2 and I ended up taking the test on it.
Also when I go to the JAVA HELP SITE that says How do I test whether Java is working on my computer? on the laptop it shows the Java Applet fine & dandy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Paul

Uninstall Java from Add/Remove Programs. Download JavaRa, unzip it then run the program to remove all older versions of Java. Then try to reinstall it.

Whiskeyman-I have tried that before and it didn't help but I thought why not give it another shot. Still no good.
So I uninstalled it again using the Revo Uninstaller & checked it again with JavaRa (it found 1 file)
Then I went to Win Explorer & deleted every file that was related to JAVA or SUN--now I go to install it again and I get this message--READY for this "This software has already been installed on your computer, would you like to reinstall it. " so I click yes and another message pops up saying "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed "

I then tried several times to D/L the Java again using both the Java & SUN sites. Same message keeps popping up.

I go to the racing site where I watch the "LIVE TIMING" and try to open it up--all of a sudden it gives me the option to install Java Version--Java2 Runtime SE v!.4.2_19
which is a older version & it does install and is listed in in the Control Panel's Add & remove--also my Java Icon appears in the Control panel also. So I once again try to install the latest version of Java and I keep getting the same messages.

I figure it's to close to Halloween & something strange is really happening so I just used the System Restore to take me back to this morning and the latest version of Java came back in the control panel but again when I go to the Java site to verify it the Appelet doesn't show and it tells me I have the wrong version installed.
I get a lot of the famous EMPTY BOXES with the RED X in them and that's another reason I would like to solve this problem besides not being able to get to some of my test sites.

Sorry about the long post but I had to explain the craziness
& hope someone will recognize what is happening and give me an answer.

    Thanks,
    Paul

Open IE7 and click on Tools then Internet Options. Select the Security tab and highlight the Internet zone. Click on the Custom level button and reset to Medium. Click Reset and accept the setting them click OK. Now select the Advanced tab and make sure that Enable third-party browser extensions* and Use JRE 1.6.0_xx <applet> are check, click Apply, OK then restart IE7.

Whiskeyman--When I go to the Security tab it is showing--MEDIUM--when I click on the Custom Level it's shows--MEDIUM-HIGH(default)--I lower it to Medium & it asks me "If I want to change level" & I hit yes then click OK---BUT after I close IE & even reboot the computer I go back to the Security tab & it shows MEDIUM by the SLIDER bar but when I select Custom Level it shows MEDIUM-HIGH(default)--I tried it several times & the same thing happens & I do hit APPLY on the way to closing the box.

Plus this problem seems to be getting worse--I checked my Add & Remove panel & it shows that I have -JAVA (TM) 6 Update 16 installed--when I close the Add & remove window and try to acess the -JAVA CONTROL PANEL--with the coffee cup in CONTROL PANEL it won't open.

I also checked all the other things you suggested.

One question concerning IE options: under the Advanced tab there is a listing call--MICROSOFT VM & it has 3 boxes under it

    1-Java console enabled
    2-Java logging enabled
3-JIT complier for virtual machine enabled

Should any of those boses be checked/unchecked?

Worse yet--when I go to try & see if the Java is working at all I go to my "Live Timing" site which runs Java and when I click on "Live Timing" any IE window I have open at that time closes

Also when I check the Win EXPLORER Tree there is ALL KINDS of stuff listed for Java under Program Files & Common files under Program files --plus SUN files under Program files & paul Application files.

In the Program files I have 2 folders/files for Java-

    1--listed as JAVA- Jre6
2nd listed as JAVA2--under which there is a listing named--J2Re1.4(2).2_19

It it possible I have 2 Java installs & they are conflicting with each other?

    Anymore ideas please.

    Paul
