I cannot download JAVA even with the configuration checked in Internet Options Advanced tab to allow java? It just goes to cannot display webpage?

ALso I have high CPU usage and memory usage when online? Can I fix this by eleminating too many processes running? I am not sure what to get rid of? Keep in mind my computer crashed and was brought back to life a few months ago!

    Thanks,

    Monaj

Hi Monaj. Is there a reason why you need Java installed? If you don't have any programs or go on any websites that require it then I would suggest that you uninstall it from your computer.

Is your computer slow when you boot it up or is it only slow when you are browsing on the Internet?

    Evan-

I was trying to get some coupons for Allegra which required Java, it is not crucial. Java is not installed on my computer at all now, since it crashed I suppose.

I am further having issues with links in my Comcast emails. For instance the link to this thread in the email, when you click on it does not connect just jumps to top of page. I had to get out of email and login to BBS. I suspect out of date drivers maybe the cause, I am going to update them??

My computer is a little slow on startup to load all the processes in the bar, but it logs on the internet fast, I just received another notice of "high CPU usage" as we speak, it is normally when I am on the internet, where I do most of my work.

I though I saw a message at the top of the page about fixing this issue of CPU, but I dont see it now? You were supposed to click on it. Let know thanks so much.

Ok lets speed up your machine a bit and then we will get to resolving your e-mail issue.

Since the computer is pretty slow, follow these steps to make the computer run faster:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you don't use.

    2. While in the Add/Remove programs window click the button that says Add/Remove Windows Components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, and Windows Messenger. Then click the Next button. When the wizard finishes click the finish button to close the window.

    3. Download and run ATF Cleaner. Save the program to your desktop. Run the program and when it opens select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button. Download it from here, ATF Cleaner.

    4. Run Disk Cleanup. Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files on the Disk Cleanup tab. Now click the More Options tab and under System Restore click the cleanup button. When it asks you if you want to delete all but the most recent restore point click Yes. Now click Ok on the Disk Cleanup window to allow Disk Cleanup to remove unnecessary files from the computer.

    5. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following, Black Vipers Services Guide.

    6. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag. Make sure to uncheck any toolbars in the installation wizard as they are not needed. After the installation finishes, open the program. When you open the program click on Settings< Defrag Priority and select High Priority. Then click on Settings< Program Settings< Algorithms Tab. Select the Delete temporary files before defragmenting checkbox and select the Move system files to the beginning on the disk checkbox. When done, click Ok to close the Settings window. When you are ready to start the defragmentation process select the small down arrow next to the word Defrag and select Defrag and Optimize. The process could take a long time so please be patient. Download it from here, Auslogics Disk Defrag.

    7. Download and run Auslogics Registry Defrag. Make sure to uncheck any toolbars in the installation wizard as they are not needed. After the installation finishes, open the program. When the program opens click the Analyze button. When the process finishes analyzing click the Defrag Registry button followed by clicking the Restart button to finish the registry defrag process. Download it from here, Auslogics Registry Defrag.

    8. Download and run Autoruns. After you download the zipped folder on your desktop, right click the zipped folder and click Extract All. After the folder has been extracted, open the regular folder. Run the autoruns.exe program. When you open the program click the Logon Tab and then highlight and remove any programs that you don't need to startup with your computer. Download it from here, Autoruns.

    9. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab< Under where it says Performance hit the settings button. In the Performance Options window click the Advanced tab and under Virtual Memory click the Change button. In the Virtual Memory window make sure your hard drive is selected and select the option that says System Managed Size and click the Set button. Now click Ok on the Virtual Memory window to close it. Now in the Performance Options window click the Data Execution Prevention tab and select the option that says Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select. After that's done click Ok on all the windows to close them out and then reboot the computer.

    10. Click Start< Run and type fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 1 and hit enter.

After that command has been entered, click Start< Run again, delete the contents in the Run box and now type fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 1 and hit enter.

    11. Take a look at these three links to further speed up your computer, Make Windows XP Shut Down Faster, Speed up Windows Start Menu, Automatically end tasks.

    12. Click Start< Run type in cmd and hit enter. The Command Prompt window will open. Paste the following command in the Command Prompt window and press enter, Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks.

    13. Run Check Disk on the hard drive to repair any errors in the file system. To do this click Start< My Computer. Right click on your hard drive and click on Properties. Then once the hard drive properties dialog box opens, click on the Tools Tab. Under where it says Error-checking click on the Check Now button. Ensure that both the Automatically fix file system errors and the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors checkboxes are both checked. After that is done click on the Start button. Check Disk will ask you to schedule the disk check when you restart your computer. Click on yes to do this and then restart your computer to allow check disk to run.

    14. Download the Junkware Removal Tool and save it to your desktop. Double click on the JRT program to run it. Post the JRT log in your next reply.

    15. Please download AdwCleaner and save it to your desktop. Run the program. When the program opens click on the Scan button. Then when the program has finished scanning, click on the Clean button. The program will reboot the computer. Post the AdwCleaner log in your next reply.

    16. Download HijackThis to your desktop. Run the program and on the Main Menu click the button that says Do a system scan and save a logfile. Post the HijackThis log in your next reply.

    17. Could you let me know what security programs that are installed?

    18. How many processes are running in the Windows Task Manager?

Let me know if your computer is any faster after performing the above steps.

I also wanted to ask, do you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Internet Explorer 8 installed? Do you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed? If Java is listed in Add/Remove programs then I would suggest that you remove it since you stated that its not critical to any websites that you visit or other programs that are on the machine.

Do you know what video card your computer has?

    Evan-

I will perform these steps tomorrow am. I do have Service Pak 3, Explorer 8.06, no Java,
Adobe Flash Player 11-(visible only in add remove programs), Video Card -Legacy Capture Device you may have to direct me on this one).

Is it ok to update frivers, I downloaded Microsoft driver updates for XP-it costs 29.97 to fix it- says I have 15 out of date drivers. I will not do this unless it is safe and effective.

No do NOT use any programs to update drivers especially if those programs are charging you money to do this.

Follow the steps above to speed up your machine then we will get to updating your video driver and getting your e-mail issue resolved.

The slow CPU message sounds like Malware to me. Stay clear of that stuff as Evan has advised. Neil.

Most of the time you don't really need to update drivers. If you are having some type of problem with hardware that has a driver, you should go directly to the manufacture of the hardware to get the driver.

The only driver that you need to worry about updating is your video driver unless you are having issues with other hardware devices.

To answer your question about my security on my computer: Norton Security Suite with automatic live updates version 20.4.0.40 downloaded form Comcast for free!.

I also have the Adwcleaner which I saw on another thread and downloaded.

    Evan-
Thank you and I will not update the driver's until you direct me on the video card. I will go through the list in the morning when I am fresh and post after I am done.

Oh- and there are 39 processes running in Task Manager, seems like a bit much.

39 processes running isn't too much. I run close to that on this PC I just assembled from the parts of 4 computers to replce my old PC that finally died after building it 10 years ago. The only slow down issue I had with it after a fresh install of XP SP3 was due to Microsoft Update. I switched to Windows Update to solve that problem.

When the CPU usage seems to be too high right click on the Taskbar and open Task Manager. Under the Processes tab click on the CPU column twice to bring up the process that is using the CPU the most to the top of the list. Post what that process is. Normally it should be System Idle Process, but if it is different it may lead us to where the problem is.

WHiskeyman- I will try this procedure for certain. Note: my computer crashed in the SUmmer (blue screen of death) and was brought back to life. Also I get the High CPU usage only when online esp facebook or surfing the web. Sometimes Internet Explorer stops responding-then picks up again. THe CPU usage can range from 2% then all of sudden go to 100%.

WHiskeyman- I checked the Task Manager and yes the System Idle is at the top-then iexplorer has 100,948, and iexplorer has other processes running as well-at least 3.

While I was idle but connected to the internet via comcast, the performance ranged from 2% to 96% and I was not even doing anything online.
