My Hp Scanjet scanner, Model 3570C, purchased in September 2003, has stopped working all of a sudden. I contacted HP and they wrote back and said it was a Microsoft related error and referred me to you.

So far I have used Add/Remove Programs and completely deleted the HP Scanner program from my machine and tried to reload it twice from the installation disc I got when I purchased the scanner.

Each time the same error message comes up after each attempt to reload the program:
"Unable to start application - the Java Virtual Machine cannot be loaded. Class not registered. "

Windows has downloaded a lot of updates to my machine recently. Could there be a glitch somewhere in those downloads?
What steps should I take to repair this problem?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, respectfully, Burnice

    Hi, Burnice.

I had a similar problem earlier this week with HP's "Director" software. When I clicked HP Director's "Copy" icon to make copies of a document I placed on my HP PSC 1209 printer-scanner-copier, nothing happened.

I don't recall getting the Java Virtual Machine error message you described. However, I did not uninstall the software for my HP PSC either. I fixed my problem by downloading and installing HP's "Critical update to resolve an issue with HP Director after installing Internet Explorer 7" from their website instead.

If you recently installed Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, then read on. :)

Look for the January 2007 (01-2007) "Critical update to resolve an issue with HP Director after installing Internet Explorer 7" on the HP Software & Driver downloads page linked here (for the HP Scanjet 3570c scanner). It's currently the first item in the "Update" section.

Here's a direct link to the "critical update" file download page.

If you continue to have difficulties installing the scanner software from your CD after you have installed HP's "critical update ", then perhaps a newer version of your scanner software (if available) from the HP Software & Driver downloads page for the HP Scanjet 3570c scanner will install properly.

Perhaps you can use Windows XP's System Restore to restore your computer to a time immediately prior to your scanner software uninstall. If System Restore is successful, then restart your computer and install HP's "Critical update to resolve an issue with HP Director after installing Internet Explorer 7 ". (You might need to reinstall your HP scanner software after using System Restore and before applying HP's "critical update" since I don't think System Restore will restore your HP Director software installation.)

Please keep us posted on what works (or not).
