    Navigator 4.75 with Windows 95.

    Present problems.
    1) If Java loaded time delay very long.
    2) What should setting be for Java Security?
    3) Should Enable "What's Related" be checked?
    4) Should Automatically load "What's Related" be checked.

Thanks to earlier help from Ramona other Navigator problems. Almost back to normal now.

    Thanks John Margo

    Hi John,

Great to see you "back at the Forum ".

    1. Need more specifics. On any particular links?
You might also consider upgrading, as Versions 4.78 and 4.79 have improved support for the Sun Java plug-in. Here are the Release Notes for these Versions.

    2. Enable JavaScript only

    3. & 4. Not on my PC. What's Related contains spyware, in that it draws up a list of all the links which you visit, and sends this information to a central location. It's up to you, of course, and the function (What' S Related) is prone to controversy. I am a privacy advocate, so in good conscience, strongly urge you not to use this feature.

Let me know if you have further questions.

    Ramona :D

    EDIT:
Should have added that SmartDownload is also spyware. This is not new information, but facts of which you might not be aware.

SmartDownload contacts Netscape and "phones home" with every download. The "phone call" includes the URL of the file you are downloading as well as a file-download- counter and a unique GUID (Globally Unique IDentifier) that identifies you, personally, and stays with you pretty much forever. This gives these companies the ability to keep detailed records of your entire downloading history!! To quote Steve Gibson

Ramona: Many thanks for quick reply.

    Java extremely slow at: http://finance.yahoo.com/?u.

I appreciate your suggestion but an analysis of what changed in the last week indicates this is anew occurrence. Previously Java loaded adequately. For the present I only wish to get my past performance back.

Thanks for the recs on "What's related ". Eliminated all boxes on the Navigator Smart Browsing window. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks John M.

    John,

Are you doing preventive maintenance on a frequent basis? If not:

    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername

    Delete: netscape.hst
Delete: all contents of Cache folder

    C:\Windows\Temp
    Delete: All *.tmp files

Using my Win95, with Netscape 4.75, PC, I was able to access the http://finance.yahoo.com/?u link with no problems. Try the above and see if it helps. Post back with results.

Yes, it is an interesting feature, it not only shows you other related websites, but also some data about that website, such as the popularity and owner's detail.
The related websites are primarily selected by a large number of volunteer, particularly from dmoz.org

My suggestions on Automatically load of What's Related be set to "never" therefore you can enjoy What's related features and not sending any data back to Netscape or third party when you are not interested to see What's Related.

(I am different to Ramona, and I don't think you will leak out any of your privacy by enabling What's Related in the settings I suggested.)

Being a user of several Yahoo features, I can tell you that Yahoo is notorious for being inconsistent. If you haven't changed any settings and something in Yahoo fails to work, the only soultion I recommend is wait. Yahoo will either fix their problem or replace the old bug with a new one.

    Java Slow

Thanks for replies. I will answer several suggestions below & ask additional questions.

Ramona: Yes, I eliminated "netscape.hst" files and then this am when logged on to web I noticed another netscape.hst file with today's date. Is on generated with each log on?
I eliminated all *.tmp & cache (items I do, but perhaps not frequently enough. I recall a "RJ" advisng these steps several months ago.
Results of login to finance.yahoo.com/?u - 70 seconds for java to load.
I like comments from Recerrato that Yahoo may eventually solve problem. What was your login time to Yahoo site Ramona?
New questions (probably dumb - but better to ask)
    1) Java security checked. Is this correct?
    2) Navigator Applications screen I noticed the following: Many duplicates: example; Winamp File (4 times), VND File (9 times), "rundll32.exe" ms conf file ( 3 times). I could list others. Any comments.

Thanks again for the replies. I will post a new item that involves TurboTax 2001, Navigator & web connection on Windows bulletin. Many good heads around that will probably shed light on a problem Intuit avoids.

Yes, Netscape regenerates a new netscape.hst file.

I like comments from Recerrato that Yahoo may eventually solve problem. What was your login time to Yahoo site Ramona?

    15 seconds with a 26,400 connection, 166 MHz processor.

No question is a dumb question!

    1) Java security checked. Is this correct?
I'm not certain which setting to which you're referring.

    2) Navigator Applications screen I noticed the following: Many duplicates: example; Winamp File (4 times), VND File (9 times), "rundll32.exe" ms conf file ( 3 times). I could list others. Any comments.

    This is normal

    Java Loading

Ramona: Success once again - many thanks. I matched your load time for finance.yahoo. Now what did I do?

    1) I performed all you advised plus I read other postings and found rference to delete the nsreg.dat file. I did so.

    2) In Navigator under edit/preferences/Roaming Access/Item Selection screen a Java Security can be slected. Check it or not?

Thanks for moving my TT/Navigator posting to applications. My ignorance as to where to post.

Once again I hail the wisdom of those who moderate and post on this site.

    Thanks again. :D John M.

Either rebuilding the Netscape Registry, by deleting the nsreg.dat file, or rcerrato's suggestion to just "wait" for Yahoo to fix their site. One or the other worked! Congrats!

Roaming Access: unless you are networked, there is no need to use any of those settings.
