What are the symptoms? Are js buttons non-functional? Do js redirects fail?

Did you also reinstall IE, preferably 6? The IE installation contains the Windows scripting engine.

    EDIT----
That was incorrect. Only the IE6 installation for XP includes the scripting engine.

My browser does not display any Java Script. And yes buttons which I know are Java driven on
web pages I know don’t work

No I did not reinstall IE and prior to reinstallation of Windows 98 there was no problem with
Java. Maybe I should reinstall IE?

    Reinstalled IE 6:-(

Well I did reinstalled IE 6 and nothing! No Java script
There must be some kind of setting with in IE which enables and disables Java Script. I just
    can’t find it:-(

Look in Tools, Internet Options, Security. Click Internet, then Custom Level.

Scroll down to Scripting and see if you have enabled it.

(The scripting of Java applets is not related to Javascript.)

You mention that you didn't reinstall IE because there was no problem with Java. Is it Java (originated by Sun MicroSystems) or Javascript (originated by Netscape) that you think has the problem? They are totally different things and not related to one another.

Java requires Sun's or MS' virtual machine, but Javascript, a scripting language, requires Windows scripting host.

You could try installing version 5.5 of the Windows scripting host:
    http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/vbscript/scripting.asp

EDIT --- that page is no longer available. Windows Script 5.6 for Win98 is available here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads...S/027/001/733/msdncompositedoc.xml&frame=true

Now, for the matter of Java---
If you want to install/reinstall the MS Virtual Machine for Java, you can find it here:
    http://java-virtual-machine.net/download.html

If you would like to try Sun Microsystems version:
    http://java.sun.com/webapps/download/Display

If you install both (a good idea), then you can go to the Control Panel and enable/disable Sun's version. If Sun's is disabled, the MS version kicks in :) .

Glad it worked. Now if we can just figure out what causes the problems :D . Looks like it was Java that was the thorn in your side.
