    Hi,

I just registered today and I put myself down as an Intermediate but I realize that I am actually a Beginner. I am going to try to get that changed.

I read a few posts of others having Java problems as well. Java is been giving me problems. My first question is What is the difference between all the Javas :

Java terms -- Java Runtime Environment, Java Updates, Plugins etc. Please tell me what each of these terms mean.

Dealing with installing updates -- Also, which of these should I expect to be notified of an update. I read here that if I install a new update, I should uninstall the old one. I believe I have tried that in the past but it wouldn't install. I did a Google search and arrived at a different forum (which I didn't join :)) and someone suggested installing offline.

Deleting Java Cache -- Several weeks ago, to empty Java cache I just went to the Control Panel, doubled click Java and there was the button to push to clear the cache. No problem. Then after I did an update 6_11, i must have uninstalled something because now, when I click on Java, I get this error message : The system cannot find the registry key specified:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.6.0_11

    A system restore didn't help.

Also, someone mentioned that they tried to get rid of unnecessary Java files. Which files should be uninstalled (Their names) and which aren't? Anyway they suggested running CCleaner and also AFT-Cleaner which is for Win XP. I already use CCleaner. I decided to install AFT and run it. For those who may not be familiar, AFT has two areas: Main and Firefox. There are boxes to click on to delete Cookies, Cache, temp files, Java cache, etc. Since I use both IE and also Firefox, I decided to empty all these things under both the Main and Firefox. Well, I did something wrong because I am unable to play Pogo (online game)

Under Add/Remove Programs there are 2 Java entries:
    Java (TM) 6 update 10
Java (TM) SE Development Kit 6 update 7.

Should I remove these? What else can I do?

    Thanks so much.

I tried to remove these from the Contol Panel. I could not.

First was the Java 6 Update 10. Error message said they could not find the installation package, "jre1.6.0_10-c.msi "

So I did a search and sure enough there is no such file. There are lots of other Java files but not that one.

When I tried to remove the Java SE Development Kit 6 Update 7 the error message says "Fatal Error during installation ".

I'm not sure what to do.

    Hi Janice,

Just looked at your intro... Try staying in the UK (especially north) this time of year. You're lucky if you get 5'C on a warm day Brrr ;)

    Anyway, back on topic.

What were the initial problems you had with Java?

And (Jeez never start a sentence with and ;) ) have you actually tried as you mentioned before an offline installation?

You can download the necessary here.

I have had a few situations where a problem developed. Once Java popped up saying there is an update to download. After I download it, everything seems fine. Then I go to empty the Java Cache and I get the error message I mentioned. [Right now I can empty the Java cache with no error message problems.] Another time I was playing pogo and it said that it looks like I don't have Java installed (which I did).

Yes I did do the offline installation.

Right now it seems to be behaving itself so I'll just wait until it gives me fits again.

As I understand it, you tried to uninstall Java (TM) 6 update 10 through Add/Remove but couldn't, right?

    Try this:

Go to SDN Archive and find "Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE)" > "JDK/JRE - 6 ", set the dropdown menu to "6 Update 10" > clicking "Go" will bring you to Archive: Download Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE) 6 Update 10. At that page, make sure to download JRE 6u10 (The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications). You don't need JDK 6u10 (The Java Development Kit (JDK) supports creating Java applications) unless you're a developer.

Install it (should bring "jre1.6.0_10-c.msi" back onto your system) and next, through Add/Remove, uninstall it. Successful?

Did you try to uninstall Java (TM) SE Development Kit 6 update 7 through Add/Remove? (Why is it installed? An end user doesn't need it!) Successful? If YES, don't reinstall it (unless you need it). If NO, try the method above.

I would try getting rid of both installed versions prior to installing JRE 6u11.
