I have online class through my local university. The software they use (WebCT) uses Java in its bulletin boards. When I click on a message in a bulletin nothing happens.

If I right click and select 'open in new window' I get a blank window with the following in the address bar:

    Javasript:void(0).

This started out of the blue about a week ago - sometimes the pages open - more often than not they don't.

    This happens in I.E. 6.0
Have also tried Netscape 4.78 - same thing.

Now, when I downloaded Opera which includes Java 7.01 it works flawlessly. I like the look of Opera but I would still like to resolve this issue.

Since I suspect that the problem is related to WinXPs not shipping with Java is there a place I can download it from?
Sun's website reads like Greek to me.

    Cheers,

    Gary

Go to this page on Sun's site and click on the "Download now - it's free!" link. That should download and install Sun's version of java.

    What a mess...

Tried the reinstallation of IE 6 as outlined in the KB article.

When I.E. 6 goes to install I get the message that 'this program has not passed windows XP compatibility testing and will not be installed" Ha Ha Ha.......

Tried it three times after three reboots - no joy. But...... Since we only edited a registry value the prevous version of I.E. is still on the machine.

    Guess what.....

Works fine now - in both I.E. and Netscape.

Got me puzzled - but time to leave well enough alone!!!

    Thanks,

    Gary

I wonder if that reg entry is back.

My father always said that only a good mechanic can take something apart that doesn't work, put it back together and have it work, and not know how he fixed it.

iceolated-- "Javascript:void(0)" means that a pop-up window is trying to load. Do you have a popup stopper activated?

No firewall, but I do have Norton Internet Security 2003. Seems when I turn the firewall off and then back on the javascript windows open fine.

I've checked the settings and it's set to allow all applets and scripts......

Further investigation (slang for should have looked deeper in the first place !!!!) reveals that NIS 2003 has a pop-blocker in it. I left the ad-blocker enabled but disabled pop-up blocking. We'll see if that makes a difference.

    Thanks,

    Gary
