    I must have been asleep in class that day but can someone share any knowledge or any previous links to info on this Java Snafu that I may have missed out on. I have read link after link until cross-eyed but I must be missing something cause I can't seem to find any faq on whether IE still supports java and plug-ins or if it is now considered a "NON Java Compliant Browser ". I keep getting double messages from info I do find that just confusses me more.

    I know it/they still function cause I have and use them. I'm just not sure if its because of the upgrading retention of support or if it's due to some tweaks or patches I applied in the past, or some substitute that MS has modified.

    ============
    I'm just trying gather information to try and help the posters who seem to be showing up more frequently lately with java failures.

    This is what I have come up with so far but I just don't know how accurate, useful or current it is and as you can see it is still kinda' foggy on the facts with plenty of "I dunno" holes that need to be filled.

    Any enlightenment in this area would be appreciated......

    As I understand the situation, Microsoft no longer supports Java, so you will no longer be able to update or add MS versions. To expand on this, Java is no longer "bundled" with IE, so you will need to add it yourself. [NOTE*Java and JavaScript are two different things]. MS is no longer providing Java in a effort to shift people over to NET after their recent settlement with Sun. This is what you get when you go to the Java link that you used to be able to download "Microsoft’s Virtual Machine" update:
    http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm

    For the moment, you can still download the MS VM Version 5.00.3805 here, but I don't know how long this link will continue to work
    You can get Microsoft Java VM from here:
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/vm/Install/3805/W9XNT4MeXP/EN-US/msjavx86.exe or linked and download via:

    http://download.com.com/redir?pid=9...65&ontId=2417&destUrl=/3001-2417-9021165.html

    I’m not sure if one should uninstall "Java Runtime" via add/remove_software applet before running this or if installing over_top of self, will not present a problem. Perhaps someone can shed some light on this and teach us both.

    There are alternatives available and being suggested by various users when a search is done on this subject.. - Sun Java seems to be the most popular alternative. All I can do is pass along the url, I have not experienced any java problems and have never had a need to go here, so I can’t expand on this further. Researching on the advisability and the "What’s and Why’s" is up to you:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/index.html

    And just in case this is rooted to some of the older known problems such as your IE security options/settings:
    http://msft.kanisasolution.com/search/nlsearch.aspx

    I do know that if you check your IE>tools>ie options>and in the "Temporary Files Categoryâ€>view settings>view objects>you may see disabled or corrupted Java plug-ins. The disabled are most likely Netscape plug-ins which IE also no longer support. How to get around this, once again I am unsure…..

    P.S.What is this NET the cutnpaste faq snippet I found referring to.

    Guess I was a little to trigger happy on the post button..... by the looks of it I should be concentrating on ActiveX integration and the problems therein......
    http://www.pcw.co.uk/forums/thread.jsp?forum=6&thread=2749

    This is going to require a little more study_up and looksee for past "Known Problems ", but at least I'm getting warmer. :D

    Just got colder again :mad: "ActiveX and java script" are separate animals from JAVA. To pooped and definitely info overloaded. I will have to tackle this later.

    I don't use IE6 (Win95 only allows IE5.5 sp2) but I have Microsoft's latest Java VM Build 3805 installed. You can find your MS Java version by going to a ms-dos prompt and typing jview. You don't need to uninstall anything before you install the latest version. Just make sure you close IE (or close and reopen) before running the downloaded msjavx86.exe since there might be a problem if any java applets have been run in the current IE session. Also disable your antivirus program!

    I've also installed the Sun Java JRE version 1.3.1, which shows up in Add/Remove Programs as Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v 1.3.1 (I don't see the MS Java VM in Add/Remove). I don't have Sun's java enabled in IE5.5 sp2 (not even sure how to do that) since I have no problems with Microsoft's VM.

    I need Sun's JRE for Mozilla 1.0 rc3. It also works with Netscape Comm 4.79 but I prefer Netscape's built-in java.

    I've downloaded the Sun Java 2 Standard Edition v 1.4 from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html
    but haven't decided to install it yet. The download page includes a link to installation notes. The file I downloaded was j2re-1_4_0_01-windows-i586.exe
    Filesize = 9,389,240 bytes.

    There is also an automatic download page here, :
    http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html
    which I haven't tried but saw posted on the newsgroups.

    Hope that helps.

    Brett,

    I have no Browser tab in my Java Plugin Control Panel and no Sun Java option in IE's Advanced settings. Like I said, I'm using JRE 1.3.1 and running IE5.5sp2.

    After I posted, I read through forum thread link given by Ann and saw this:

    I should have realized that the problem is that Sun's JRE version 1.3.1 was designed as a Netscape-style plugin, which are no longer recognized beginning with IE5.5sp2.

    As far as I know, you can remove any of the objects in Downloaded Program Files (they can be added back if you go to a site that needs them and choose to re-download and install) but I have 2 JRE 1.3.1 objects that show up as "damaged" and looked into it awhile back and it's not a problem. Here is a c/p of some notes I saved, from NG posts:
    ===========================

    (snip)
    They say Damaged on my machine as well. My NT installation of NT is NOT on
    drive "C: ", however when I view the properties of those objects it states a
    dependency of "C:\WINNT\DOWNLOAD...\JINSTALL.INF* ". There is NO C:\WINNT and certainly no such file. Thats why they say Damaged.

    There would seem to be some some bug in the Sun Plugin installer that does this...

    Thanks Mike. Not knowing what plug-ins are making movies work (or even the difference between ActiveX and Java), I didn't know what needed fixing. I saw a status of damage for the Java 2 Environment plug-in and signed up on Sun Microsystems website for an answer. Other users there posted the 'damage' status is cosmetic meaning that while they realize it points to a dependant file located in a non-existant folder, it still works. A fix is in the making and should be included in JRE 1.4 when released. The MS support articles you point to have some possibilities there in reference to narrowing down the ActiveX errors I'm getting. I'll be looking into that next.
    Question then: Is this Java Environment plug-in necessary? Doesn't the VM from MS do the same thing?

    I agree, Jim, it was intemperate of me to have deleted it. The Sun java Run Time Environment installs "Damaged" by default. This is a purely cosmetic flaw which could be corrected by fixing the registry. Thanks for the tip.

    Just wanted to add:

    I uninstalled JRE 1.3.1 and installed JRE 1.4.0_01 this morning and I can now use Sun's Java in IE5.5sp2 to run java applets (tested it on Yahoo Games)

    I have the Browser tab now in the Java Plugin control panel and after placing a checkmark before Internet Explorer the Java (Sun) option to use Java2 v 1.4.0_01 for <applet> appeared in IE's Advanced tab.

    Thank you so much, both Brett and Alice, for responding to post. I havn't yet had the time to further explore this issue but I'm sure your links will help and I will get to it as soon as I can.

    Just wanted to make sure that this didn't get barried in the backpages before I had a chance to express my gratitude.

    Again thank you....

    You're welcome.

    I owe you and brett a "thank you" also. Your post and brett's link to the instructions to enable Sun's java in IE gave me the push I needed to update my Sun Java plugin.

    I just wanted to add some additional information I found on Jim Eshelman's E-List News, http://aumha.org/elist.htm#news
    under WHERE DID JAVA GO? (New content 7/25/02)
    ============quote=================
    At present, one place Win XP users can still get the JVM (and where I got it a couple of days ago) is that same Windows Update site, but by a circuitous route. It’s kind of hidden. When you go to Windows Update you have to click Personalize Windows Update at the left, and then Enable the Windows Update Catalog, and save your settings. This adds the Windows Update Catalog link in the left box. Click this link, and then click Find updates for Microsoft Windows systems. Pick Windows XP in the drop-down list, click Search, take Critical Updates and Service Packs, and install the March 4, 2002 Security Update. This security patch, which closes a hole in JVM, actually gives you a new full copy of JVM "” and is, therefore, an effective way to download it.

    Additionally, here are a couple of download links that still work as of this writing. Being part of university systems in Germany and Australia, I suspect they will stay around longer than most of the other links.
    ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/pub/systems/win95/fixes/VM/msjavx86.exe
    ftp.uq.edu.au/mirror/microsoft/patches/winxp/javavm_3319_MIL_4275/MSJavx86.exe
    =============endquote==============
    EDIT:
    Before installing msjavx86.exe from a non-Microsoft download site I would:
    -Right-click the downloaded file, select Properties, and check the version tab (you want the latest version 3805)
    -do a virus scan on the downloaded file, as you would with any executable file you download from a location you don't know and trust.

    Does anyone know how to do this in NS 7.0? I have Sun's Java on my drive, but can't configure it to my browser. At the Java control panel, you can choose IE and NS 6. If I check NS 6, I get the message that NS 6 cannot be detected on my computer.

    I am not having trouble loading java, but it is so unstable that at my live auctions, moving the curser causes text to appear and disappear. When someone bids on the item I am interested in, the "bid button" disappears forever. Then I cannot bid. Truly weird.

    I am having to leave NS and go to IE when I want to place bids.

    Thanks.

    You may be better off posting your NS7 questions in the Netscape Navigator forum, but, assuming this is a Java problem, it might help if you post a link to the site that gives you problems.

    It's possible that the particular site does not work well in Netscape7 or with Sun's Java.

    As far as the Netscape 6 option in Control Panel (Sun) Java Plugin, browser tab:

    I have Mozilla 1.0rc3 installed, not Netscape 7, but I also have Netscape6 UNchecked in the browser tab for the Sun Java Plug-in 1.4.0_01 applet in Control Panel. I wouldn't worry about it being unchecked. To see if the Sun Java pugin is recognized by Netscape7:

    Open Netscape 7 and go to Help, About Plugins

    In Mozilla 1.0 I see NPOJI610.dll (Java Virtual Machine for Netscape 6.x) plus 5 other Java Plug-ins listed, and each points to a different dll file in My Mozilla plugins folder:
    NPJava11.dll
    NPJava12.dll
    NPJava13.dll
    NPJava32.dll
    NPJPI140_01.dll

    (netscape7 should be similar)

    I also found the following, which may be helpful:

    Hi Alice.... thanks again for your help. I have already done almost everything suggested. That hmetzger site is fantastic, I have bookmarked it.

    I deleted all the other jre 11,12,13 etc dll's earlier and am only running the latest 104. I custom installed NS 7 and later tried deleting the 104 and downloaded it by itself. Anyhow, I think this particular java action used by live auctions probably isn't going to work in NS.

    Would you please do me a favor, since you use Mozilla? Go to: http://bidz.com and click on "three minute auctions." The Java will load and you will see items that are being bid on. The seconds will be ticking away. Click on one of the items and you will be taken to a live bid page for that particular item. There will be a button that says "login to place your bid." ... something like that. just watch that button and when someone places a bid, notice if that button disappears. If it does not, maybe I need to download the Mozilla browser.

    Thanks again!!!!!!!

    Yes, the "Login to Bid" button did disappear, just as you described, using Mozilla.

    I've noticed other sites that don't work right in Mozilla so I just use Internet Explorer or Netscape 4.79 for those sites.

    But, if the only problem is with the Login to Bid" button I would think that you could use the "Log In" button at the top of the page, as soon as you go to the site.

    Thanks again Alice....

    I do login at the top before going to the auction. After login, that button becomes the "bid" button. And therein lies the problem. When someone places a bid, that bid button disappears. Never to reappear.

    I really appreciate that you went there in Mozilla, because that confirms to me that NS just isn't ever going to work at that site. So, I will continue to use IE when I go there to bid.

    I won't waste anymore time on it. Really appreciated your help...

    Marion :)
