    hi

this is aggravating but i hope the solution is simple. my CA antivirus scan picks up the above infection but does not delete or quarantine it, and i don't understand why. is there a way to remove it manually? i have read about going to java plug ins but i cannot open them in my system folder as it says something about a registry error.

i am also getting constant hits on my firewall from something that reads "generic host process for win32 services" and somthing else called svrhost.exe. i have read on other sites this might be a virus--how can i tell and what can i do to make sure the computer is not infected? i have run several antivirus and spysweeper programs and am pretty sure the system is clean except for these two problems.

    many thanks

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

For us to get an idea we need to get a HijcakThis! log file. We can proceed after that with removal. Also where is your a-v saying the infection is located?

Please download HijackThis! SetUp from here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the HijackThis! SetUp icon to begin the installation. Follow the prompts for the default install location of:'C:\Program Files\HijackThis'. Tick the 'Create a desktop' button when the option appears. Select next, then allow HijackThis! to start.

Then press the [Scan] button. You will notice the [Scan] button will turn into a [Save Log] button. Click the [Save Log] button and notepad will open up with the contents of the scan. Right-click in the saved log, and select 'copy'. Then proceed to your original thread, unless otherwise instructed and click the '[Reply]' button and paste the saved contents to be reviewed. Do not make any modifications to the log or perform any 'fixes' until told to do so.

Ok, looks to be a SmithFraud\Zlob infection, based on one of the lines present. Fairly old one too, added to database for removal back in August.

We'll run the tool and see what it finds.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri). Save it to your desktop.

Double-click the Smithfraud.exe and it will install a new folder to your desktop, called SmithFraudFix. Shortly after that a dos command window will appear. Once it opens, hit any key to continue.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore you may get an alert.

No need for a new HJT log, just the results from the SmithFraud tool.

    smitfraud log

    SmitFraudFix v2.141

    hi

here's the log. i ran my ca anti virus last night and it came up clean this morning! hard to figure but over the past two days i've run a bunch of avg products with the recovery point setting turned off, and one of them must have cleaned it up. i'm sure there are other bugs too as you seem to have found in the log. i also still have the svrhost.exe present, and the hits on my firewall titled "generic host process for win32" which may be harmless as you describe. is it ok to let that alert have access to the internet by including it in zone alarm trusted zones?

in any event let me know what you find and i will implement suggestions.

    thanks again--you guys are rightous!

    Second part of fix:

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Please follow the instructions exactly in the order listed; this is very important!

Please download, install, and update the free version of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 Save the file to your desktop.
    1. Double-click the file and select your language.
    2. Follow the prompts to install. The application will add three start ups to your system, be sure and allow them if you have any real time monitoring of your system.
    3. Once install has completed, run the program.
    4. Be sure the two options are enabled:
      • Resident shield
      • Aromatic updates
    5. From the main AVG 'Status' screen, click the update now link the update should begin automatically. If not then hit the [Manual Update] Burton to begin updating.
    6. After the update finishes, the status bar will display "Update successful "
    7. Click the 'Scanner' tab, and select the 'Settings' tab.
    8. Under 'How to act?' click 'Recommended actions' and select 'Quarantine'
    9. Under 'Reports' be sure to tick the radio button for 'Automatically generate report after each scan' and un-tick the 'Only if threats were found box.
    10. Exit AVG. DO NOT run a scan yet.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

AFTER SmitfraudFix finishes (and after a reboot if required), please open AVG. (If a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode.)
    • Click on Scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • When the scan is finished, click the [Save report] button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Then hit the [Save report as] button.
    • Save the report to your desktop.
    • Click the 'Scanner' tab again and then click the [Apply all actions] button.
    • Close AVG
Then please restart it into Normal Windows. Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread, along with the AVG report and a new HijackThis log. (please edit out all 'cookies', 'Recycler folder' and 'restore\system volume folder' references from the AVG log)

The reason we have them edited is because they are not a threat, nor do they point to any threats, thusly provide us with no info and only make the log, at times incredibly long. :p

We have a couple of entries left to fix.

I do however notice you have AVG anti-virus and the scanner provided by YaHoo!, via Computer Associates. You need to remove one or the other, I'd recommend dumping the YaHoo! stuff, and keep the dedicated AVG free version.

Lets address the issues in HJT.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    hijack this log

hi again--here's the log. just a question on dumping my Yahoo anitvirus and going with AVG--can i just turn it off instead of uninstalling it (in case i need it for some reason later) or will they still conflict. also, i have webroot spysweeper installed as well as AVG 7.5--should i get rid of one of them too, or can i use both?

thanks again for all your help. is there a way to donate to the cause?

I'm not sure how the YaHoo! is set up, does it have an option to totally disable it or not? Most of these are set to always start and have processes which run regardless. I think you would be beater protected by AVG. It's just better than anything from CA.
As long as the AVG 'active guard' or real time protection is off, there won't be any problems. the SpySweeper active protection is stronger.
Click the 'Become a contributing member' link under your signature.

Got a few lines we can fix, which may have been returned due to SS re-inserting them, so turn off SS and fix the following lines while in safe mode:

seems to be working much better...

    hi

this seems to have done wonders for the machine--faster, crisp response, etc--i'll update you in a few weeks to see if it continues.

by the way, was one of the bugs you helped me eliminate the cause for the hits on my firewall that read "generic host services for win32 services has been blocked. "?

and was that svrhost.exe a trojan capable of stealing personal info?

thanks so much for the help.

Glad to hear the machine is performing better.

It's very possible the infection was the cause of that error. It's not an uncommon error.

And now that you mention the svrhost, I'll have to ask if that is the way it was spelled, because I certainly did not see anything in the logs. It's possible it was located in the temp folder, which the SmithFraud tool removed.

Do a file search for to see if it's present.
